Problem:
1. You start the computer 2. you wait 20-30 sec. 3. You log in 4. you wait 20-30 sec. 5. Finally you're allowed to start to work. This obviously is very complicated and time-consuming. Would be a significant improvement, if you somehow could combine the necessary actions, when you are needed to do something, meaning: either A 1. you start the computer, you log in immediately after start 2. you wait (and do smth else) 40 sec. 3. you immediately after that waiting time start to work or B 1. you start the computer 2. you wait (and do smth else) 20-40 sec 3. you login and start to work immediately Obviously B is impossible, as you select your desktop (KDE, Gnome, XFCE, Enlightenment, other) when you login and that grafical system needs some time to initialize. So the solution ist A. You have to be at the computer to start it anyway (usually at least). So you also may login (and select your desktop by doing so) and wait till it all boots up to start doing your work. This would simplify a lot. If you even decide to only use KDE and no other Desktop Environment (as I do all the time) you also may do B, as the KDE will be loaded fully before you need to login. |

This is not something KDE can do about, so I marked this as Invalid.
As for B, you can configure KDM to automatically login a user and then lock the screen. This is what I use on my desktop and netbook, since I'm (usually) the only user.

ok, thats right, didn't think about that.
However: if the Kubuntu-Team e.g. and the KDE-Team would work on this together, it should work... |

Well, KDE runs on other distros as well. And on Mac OS X, Windows etc.

This isn't that simple, it requires underlying changes to the linux kernel and/or the boot loader (usually GRUB nowadays), neither of which KDE has any control over. The Kubuntu team doesn't have any control over Linux kernel or any of the bootloaders, either. This idea would need to be submitted to the Linux kernel developers or the GRUB developers.
