The idea is not based on ribbon.
Looks at: http://slawek.lach.art.pl/Ideas/GNOME3% ... 20idea.png and http://slawek.lach.art.pl/Ideas/GNOME3% ... %20bar.png The ideas is hard to realize, but it brings better way to use application. This idea is created on my experience with GIMP application. The idea is sort of this ideas: 1) Implementing dockable menu entry/section 2) Allow to drag menu entries onto panels 3) We additionally showing any menu splited menu entries on right of menubar. 4) Allow to search/filter for menu items/options Probably nobody remember old GTK application, which offers split able menus. In my opinion, it was awesome think! I can speed up access to most wanted options, like file menu. There's also one major usability bug. Unndocked menus will be showed as small window and there's no way to dock it into panel. It was very annoying, because menu entry can hide window content. The idea is about combining top panel and menus. Most applications using both techniques and application provides top panel allows to disable it. Konqueror allows to hide menu. Why don't combine both thinks? Use case: 1) Margaret using a lot options of program, but most of them are placed in format menu section. She needs to have quick access to them. She undocks format section, so this section would additionally been showed on right of menubar. Margaret dock format menu section to bottom panel. Once she tries search bold all others options(not matching to criteria) on all panels, but not bold will been faded. Additionally, when Margaret press enter new top panel, called 'search' brinks. On this top panel Margaret have all matching search criteria. 2) Peter are using GIMP. He gets frustrated by MDI user interface. Thanks to my idea, all dockable window are showed on right side of menu bar, so Peter can speed called each. Additionally he can search for some options.

Nowadays, I had better idea, but I must get time to describe it. Basically we can combining main window menu with top panel, but in other way. All menu sections will be showed in top panel and we have arrows to navigate on it. Moving mouse over menu entries will move view of top panel into elements of this section. Additionally user can click on section, but it morph top panel. We get description with links to most used elements of current section. Additionally below we had dropable menus to all elements of section and to elements for subsection.

Links to your mock-ups do not work anymore...
And your update of idea is hard to understand. Try to make it easier to understand and please make some mock-ups
