imagine: you work in a network workgroup. you have a file to give to a collegue on that network. to do so, you just have a plasmoid on the desktop that represents this collegue (ideal: with photo). you simply drag-and-drop the file you want to share with him onto this plasmoid and you are done.
The file gets transfered in the background to your collegues computer, as soon as it is running. And immediately on your collegues desktop a folder-plasmoid (with your name and photo on it) opens with the file inside. (and you get a note, that the transfer is complete) there would be more to wish: you find a url you want to share with this or another collegue. Drag-and-drop the url onto the collegues plasmoid on your desktop, and on his desktop a plasmoid opens with the link to click on or even a preview of the site in the little desktop browser plasmoid that there is. you have a piece of text (a code snippet, a paragraph of an article, a note, a telefone number, a name, could be everything), you mark it, drag-and-drop it to your collegues plasmoid on the desktop and he gets it on his desktop in an appropriate form (e.g. as a simple line of text). perhaps there is even more information to share... music, drag-and-dropped and streamed to your collegues desktop, video, ... Such a thing needs to be better than google wave, that uses central servers that none of us really wants having all our data moved across. Easiest way to realize such a tool might be to build a plasmoid that incorporates much of the 'giver' http://code.google.com/p/giver/ functionality, relying on the avahi/zeroconf daemon to contact other computers and other users, but with the expanded functions described and in form of a KDE plasmoid of course. This plasmoid should know your buddies, and be able to 'work' with them offline, so you can give them files, information, links etc., even when they are not online. They simply get the stuff, when they are back online. For that you need to have a list of your buddies, to address them, even when they are offline (different in giver that only works with online buddies). Without a server of course, there needs to be a sufficient timespan when your computer and your buddies computer are online at the same time, or the p2p client plasmoids built something like a cloud... what do you think of the idea...? |

the feature list of kepas sounds pretty much like my proposal. I have searched kde-look and kde-apps for that, but neither avahi nor zeroconf listed this. so I wrote the brainstorm proposal. I'll test it... |

Please let us known either way so we can either approve the idea or close it. If there are specific limitations of kepas you should probably contact the developer with requests rather than asking for a duplicate of an existing program. Please do not submit ideas for kepas here, kepas is a third-party application and therefore is not supported by the brainstorm forum.

The plasmoid part sounds similar to the network push/pull of plasmoids that (I think) is scheduled to be a part of KDE 4.4.
Similar in the vein that it should be easier to implement such a plasmoid for 4.4.

As far as idea moderation is concerned this idea is fulfilled by Kepas as well as part of the roadmap for 4.4. I will close this idea - any other ideas can be opened anew.
