hey all, i suggust changing the draganddrop behavoir for file management (Dolphin, Konquerer, Folder View Plasmoid etc)
currently: dragadndrop with left mouse button: menu pops up draganddrop with right mouse button: doesnt exist my idea: draganddrop with left mouse button: copy file/folder draganddrop with right mouse button: menu pops up this would speed up file management, and also be more user-friendly for GNOME and Windows converts

Please clarify which menu you mean (I assume it's the one in file managers?).

I prefer it how it is.

i dont but seriously, im not suggusting remove the current functionality, just moving it to the other mouse button. Or just make it configurable... |

I agree that the behavior should be configurable.
It is certainly convenient the way that it is if you are used to that way (esp. since the right-click menu comes up immediately and you can just select the menu option by releasing the mouse button), but there are many people (myself included) who are used to the other way (because we also frequently use Gnome, Windows or other environment where it works that way) and would like to have that option available.

Dragging and Dropping is in my opinion some movement, so I'd rather expect moving than copying files. It's done in GNOME as well this way, just moving between different devices results in copying (which I can understand, as you want to share data on Devices and not just have it once.
It works quite well for me and allows me to easily drag'n'drop music from my library to my mp3 as well as moving files on my harddisk (In fact, the need of copying files on your harddisk so you have multiple entities is quite rare). So, please adopt this behaviour! |

You know you can hold down Shift or Ctrl to Move/Copy? I think the menu is a better default behavior.

yeah but not for people who dual boot with windows or use GNOME as well; they are used to the default behavior.

@Hans: To me holding shift is neither very usable (it's annoying) nor is it what I would exspect as an user. So from a usability point of view this isn't good, as the user won't get what he exspects.
Btw: Same critique to Konqueror moving tabs only with middle-click - the function (moving tabs) is not where the user does exspect it and therefore it's a problem. Putting things where user exspect them and letting them do what the user exspects is a very important point in my opinion and would help a lot with improving usablity. Would you agree? If not, why not? I admit I didn't study usability so if someone could help out this would be nice. |

About "usability": The current behaviour has been used for years, while this possibility have been considered as well. On the other hand, all your arguments are based on personal experience and preferences.
Tabs: In Konqueror from trunk the tabs move with the left click and a nice animation while the tab is being dragged.

I agree it should be user-configurable, this is all about personal preferences and previous habits. kind of difficult trying to change paradigms on people used to windows GUI for all their lifetimes !!!
After all, it is said that Linux is a highly-customizable OS, ain't it? but not just under-the-hood settings, let's make it real for everything that implies interaction with the final user, name it: Desktop Environment. =) |

The current behaviour is one of my favourite things about KDE!
It doesn't try to guess what you want, it asks. Selecting move from the list that appears doesn't really take any longer, and it means I know what it's actually going to do. The only argument against it so far is "other OSs do it differently". That isn't going to win anyone over, unless you can explain why the other OS does it better. As for adding an option...no! more options are bad. |
