Pyrename as Plugin for Dolphin

Tue Dec 01, 2009 5:08 pm
Additional Problem: pyRename is much easier and better to use than Krename.

Situation: I often work with files and directories with Dolphin and have the need to rename a lot of files in the same manner.

pyRename is e.g. a nice tool for that, easy to use and with powerful features.

Problem: However, it sucks to start pyrename as a separate application - go to the k-menu, open pyRename, navigate it to the directory that I have already open in Dolphin, and then, finally be able to start renaming.

[Suggestion/Proposal/Solution[/b]: As Dolphin is a file-manager, I suggest to implement the pyRenamer functions as part of Dolphin, as a plugin like the 'Places' or 'Konsole' snapins, so in the same way, as you can open a konsole view using F4, you should be able to enter the mass-rename-toolbox similar to pyRename by pressing F10 or another hotkey.

Pyrename as Plugin for Dolphin

Personally I like metamorphose2 for mass renaming but that's me. When I need to do this from within Dolphin I just use Krename from the service menu as it's already there.

Why don't you create a service menu to do this for yourself, just reuse the krename ones (yes there's 2 under actions)

And I assume you've seen this http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com/idea/21372/

Pyrename as Plugin for Dolphin

I marked this as invalid since it's somewhat easy to accomplish this for the user in question (or for the distro for that matter).

All that's required to do is to set up a shortcut in kmenuedit to launch the appropriate mass-renamer. There is a drawback to that: the shortcut isn't tied exclusively to dolphin but that's a trade-off I (if you think I'm wrong, I'm open to be convinced I am) think is worthwhile. A mass-renamer can be quite intimidating to inexperienced users and as such may not be a good idea to have available from the word go as long as more experienced users can somewhat easily make the function available.

Secondly, even for those that do need/use a mass-renamer how such a tool should work is rather individual. It's a somewhat niche "power" tool and for that reason it's probably better to leave the selection up to the end-user.
