I've been using Kubuntu 9.10 with KDE SC 4.4 RC1 on a very old machine (about 6 yo, 1.6 GHz Pentium 4 with around 700 MB of RAM and NVidia's 440MX).
I have Nepomuk and Strigi on (doesn't slow down the computer much). Been doing a lot of renaming in Dolphin recently, and it takes more than a second for the right-click to respond, which is quite annoying for this task. In a similar way, most panels features take a little while to respond as well. I remember similar response times on (much) stronger machines. Though, I must say that I enjoy Dolphin and Plasma very much. Chose Kubuntu instead of XP even though XP might be quicker about on this machine. |

Unless you have a suggestion on how to make this happen, this isn't a valid idea.

True ... Then maybe just delete it, and I'll write anew when I have a more solid notion of how to make it more responsive

I think dolphin isn't quite ready yet. While it boasts a wonderfully well thought out design I have had similar delays which I also could not fathom (and found quite frustrating). Perhaps KDE 4.5 will sort it or it just takes time to identify the exact faults.
May I suggest that you try konqueror for those kind of tasks in the meantime.
