KDE could do with more resources. Money being one of them. The idea is as follows:

- An advertisement plasmoid that people can optionally add to their desktop
- The user chooses his/her interests for instance:
- Programming
- Cooking
- Musical instruments/equipment
- Travel
- Books
- Gadgets
- Movies
- Music

- Each keyword becomes a tag
- The advertisement plasmoid can display text only or image ads. When the user clicks on an ad KDE makes a little bit of money.

Of course adding the widget is completely optional and the idea is to show relevant ads to users. Ads can even be geolocation based so as to show local businesses or services to the user.

KDE could use more money, true. But this is not a good way to get that.

Your idea reminds me a little of google ads. But have you ever clicked on one of those ads? I did once, accidentally!
Search engines can force ads, plasmoids are optional. So should someone create such a widget it will be installed and people will just click random links to support KDE. Obviously a waste of time while the generated profits are minimal.

There has to be a better way...

A better idea, if not already implemented, would be for KDE to engage in a search agreement with Google to have it be the default search engine in Konquorer similar to the search deals FireFox and Opera have

I'm more in the google01103 idea.
But well, Google wouldn't give a single penny for that : they don't need it, most of KDE user probably already use Google.
It's more something to ask to Yahoo (which is currently in contract with Firefox) and Ask.com (which is himself in contract with Opera).

I suspected that this idea might be buried into oblivion... but I just wanted throw it out there.

@DaSheep: If there is a better way, then what is it? Konqueror doesn't have nearly enough users to be considered for a google deal like the one Mozilla has.

Increase kde merchandise? Make some new stuff, add more Items...
There are enough kde-fanboys out there to make a nice profit and you get some marketing at the same time! Hell, if a T-shirt looks cool enough people will wear it without knowing what KDE means. Perhaps a little bit exaggerated :)
Advantages: independent of external companies for profit, good marketing stunt
Disadvantages: Small profit, limited (where ads keep generating profits forever)

Is this THE solution? Of course not! (It's a rather bad idea actually) It is just an Idea that I made up 5 minutes ago but if even I can find something so can other people.

If you have an idea, let me know!

About that search agreement we shouldn't look at Google. (as pointed out by plaristote) It already has the largest market share so it's probably not interested. Yahoo, Ask and Bing on the other hand are in desperate 'search' :p for a piece of the cake and they are willing to pay for it. (Yahoo deal with Ubuntu)
