1/2 Calculation

  • Mac OS X's Spotlight allows on-the-fly calculation straight from Spotlight (try "5+2". But one cannot copy the result (it has to be manually entered)
  • KRunner allows almost the same thing. On the plus side, one can copy the result (press enter to have the output become the new input). On the down side, it is required to type "=" (the equal sign).

Proposal: to be able to make such calculations straight from Kickoff (or Lancelot, but I did not try this one yet)

2/2 Quick command line

I would like to be able to ping instantly. key to invoke Kickoff, then I instantly type ping google.com then "enter" and get the job done (opening Konsole, launching the command).

Having to type a keyword beforehand is OK for me (like kon:ping google.com).

Inspiration: Gmail's advanced search

Please create one brainstorm item per idea.

---
Concerning the first idea:

Kickoff's runners are intentionally limited to prevent crashes.

Lancelot already supports calculator and other runners.

This is one and only brainstorm idea: improving Kickoff's possibilities. You may consider this is too vague and I'd accept such argumentation.

Whatever the case, you reply makes proposal number one obsolete. I'll install Lancelot (as soon as I understand how to do it in KDE) and react accordingly.

Thank you for your answer.

"This is one and only brainstorm idea"

According to this logic, you could really put all current brainstorm ideas into one called "improve kde sc".

It is not vague, you've explained the ideas rather well :)

You separated it into two completely distinct parts, each with its own title, and it would be much better if you'd filed them separately.

For example, there maybe ppl who like the idea of kon:ping www.google.com, but don't think that the calculator has a place in Kickoff. (that's the whole point in separating things here).

Cheerio, and keep posting nice ideas - we all benefit from them :)

p.s. Until something like idea2 becomes possible, you can type "konsole -e ping http://www... into KRunner/Kickoff/Lancelot
