I'm using Kde 4.5 with Debian Squeeze, and I have download the Smooth Task Plasma, to replace the original task manager in the panel...
It's great, but it could be better if I could pin applications to it (Like Windows 7, or some task bars in gnome) Thanks |

Since smooth tasks is a 3rd party add-on, this should be adressed to the author of the plasmoid.

This is already possible in smooth tasks (although it crashes on KDE 4.6 beta 1), maybe try getting a more recent build?

It is? In which version? My version doesn't anyway (20101106-2.4 according to the package manager), which makes sense if my understanding is correct. I was under the impression but I may have misunderstood it that the pinning feature would be implemented when there was support for it in the KDE-core-libs. IIRC, that would mean KDE 4.6. Which may explain why it crashes on 4.6 beta1: that feature (either in smooth tasks or KDE-core) hasn't been as thoroughly tested yet. That is, it makes sense the feature may not be available on my system since I'm still running 4.5.x

Aha, so it is possible that pin task is a standard KDE 4.6 task option which would explain why smooth tasks crashes when it is used. I will check if the normal task bar has this option (and if it works) on monday (I only have the newest packages installed on my secondary work machine).

Confirmed, pin tasks is a standard task bar feature in KDE 4.6. Smooth tasks does not support it properly yet, the author said he will update Smooth Tasks when KDE 4.6 final is available for Fedora.

Can we see some pictures of that option? Thats only what I need in KDE because Gnome have dockbarx... |

This is a picture of the task bar with some tasks pinned (although this is the standard task bar, because of the mentioned bug in smooth tasks).

Does pinned apps open task in pinned icon, like Win 7 and dockbarx or just add shortcut? Or, is Chokoq pinned up on this picture?
Thanks... |

I don't wish to appear clueless (don't use Win 7 or dockbarx) but what exactly are the benefits of pinned tasks vrs using quicklaunch or a desktop shortcut? From what I see it removes the app from the system (no ram or cpu utilized) but keeps a placeholder on the taskbar so that it's readily available (sort of a temporary launcher).
Will the each pinned tasks at some point not use full spacings on the taskbar? On my system the pinned app's name is not being shown, just the icon - though name does show when hovering. Also, shouldn't this thread be in the beta 4.6 forum as it's now a 4.6 feature. |

Pinned apps disappear if the app is running and has a taskbar entry, they reappear once the app is closed again. Choqok is pinned in the above picture, but you can't really tell since the app is open somewhere above.

So, thats not the same way like in dockbarx or W7...I just ask because I like that kind of task manager, but I now use default task manager of KDE 4.5, so I will survive without it...

just a note of change in today's update - it is no longer "pin ...." but now under "advanced" it's "show a launcher for xxxx when it is not running"

I'll have a look whether the crash with smooth-tasks is due to an error in my implementation in libtaskmanager. Anyway it will work at the latest when panzi (the smooth-tasks developer) implements the launchersupport properly in smooth tasks (he said he'll try to do that when kde 4.6 gets released). If there are any other issues please always report! PS: @punky: what's the difference? (except of running tasks having a label, that's a thing of tasks/smooth-tasks and has nothing to do with launchers itself) |

@Anton: for me the look is not so good, maybe because I have rows forced to 2 in taskbar causing the pinned apps to use way too much space
