change the name of most app in kde

Wed Jan 19, 2011 8:55 am
Hi there, I m a kde user and I've got a idea to make kde look more friendly. (sorry for my bad english i'm french).

Why all the developpeur in kde think that the name of there applications must have a "K" ? Many applications dont know where to put k in there name app, so they simply put the k before the name, without estetic and logic (like : Kradio4, karlyriceditor, kpeg, krepton, kmagnet, ktorrent, keurocalc, kmymoney, kmobiletools, kpackagekit).

Could you imagine the face of a friend whou has just been converted in kubuntu (or mandriva, opensuse, ...) and will ask to me "hey dude do you know how am I supposed to install application in kubuntu?" and I will answer him "yes for sur, use kpackagekit" and I will say "WHHAATT how the hell did you said ? could you wrote it for me ? and i will say "euhhhh I don't think so man".

and worse when he will ask me for a application to edit lyric "karlyriceditor". Or for a good web browser, I will certainly recommend him "rekonq" but what the hell is that supposed to mean "rekonq" ?????? personnaly I know the meaning of rekonq it has to do with konqueror. But a new user doesn't even knows the existence of konqueror. But how the developper of rekonq could think that rekonq could be a pretty name or practice to remind it ?

I think all this name gives the impression that kde is only for geek, actually I think it's right. Not all the people who use kubuntu know that they use kde instead of gnome or xfce, they just know that they use linux. So the meaning of the k in the applications isn't the same for all, they just think "what a hugly name". Now some developer use q instead of k witch is worse.

Sometime there is exeption like , krita, amarok, playbak who integred well the k in there name.

I've got a great respect for the developper of application for kde, they did a great great job (by the way: thank's for that) but they should thing that not all the people are geek.

They should simply rename most of application. Like

I know that kde team doesn't developp all the applications in kde but they could send email or suggest it.

There is already a general trend moving away from the K-prefix. I don't think this idea is going to have any affect whatsoever since it is a lot of work both deciding a new name, changing the reference in the code, and then re-releasing and marketing.

A few examples: Quassel, Dolphin, Nepomuk, Strigi, Akonadi, Plasma, Calligra.

But I'll leave the idea up anyway as it is a valid idea.

Quassel is not a KDE application. Or maybe it can optionally be now, but it started as Qt only application.

Well *I* like the idea of knowing a program is designed for KDE just by looking at it's name.
There is PackageKit and KPackageKit, if the name would be different you could install the one designed for Gnome by mistake, and why would you want to do that?

If you have problems telling your friends the name of the program, you do not have to sey the name like a one word, do you? Just say "yea, use K-package-kit"

And what about Apple and their iStuff? Works for them pretty well... and I think that KDE had that idea first so... they copied from US! :>
