I'd say a good place to start would be linux.com which has a lot of documentation and articles about all things linux.
Then there's distrowatch.com which keeps tabs on all of the various bundles of linux+supporting applications - called Distributions or distros. Among the more popular and easy-to-use distros are Ubuntu (ubuntu.com), Fedora (fedoraproject.org), OpenSuse (opensuse.org), Linux Mint (linuxmint.com), PCLinuxOS (pclinuxos.com), and Pardus (pardus.org.tr/eng/). All of these provide LiveCD downloads which you can burn to a CD and boot up into a fully-usable environment without touching your existing hard drive (i.e. try-before-you-buy - except that they are all free to use and install)
