Microsoft included the Microsoft GS Wavetable SW Synth in versions of Direct X as an integral part of DirectMusic. This is a version of the Roland Virtual Sound Canvas with GS sound set licensed by Microsoft from Roland Corporation in 1996. This implementation makes play back MIDI files in Microsoft Windows seamlessly.

I didn't see this implementation in many Linux Distribution. If I want to playback MIDI Files (.mid), I need to configure it by myself or using Music Player that already supported MIDI files playback.

I suggest KDE to follow Windows implementation by integrating combination between fluidsynth and soundfont (.sf2) in Phonon. (http://sourceforge.net/apps/trac/fluidsynth/)

I don't think that's up to Phonon since it's just an abstraction layer, it would be something the back-ends had to support.
