KDE Developer

I have never used such a feature...
There should be a Tag. [KDEPim]? Or maybe [Akonadi]? |

@The User
I am not developer, so I don't know how this works, but PIM is not the only application that needs this... Amarok, maybe digiKam and other apps that could use it as 'backend'. As part of some application and Sync Center (as in W$). Probably, you could go even further... |

I think it might be a good idea not to go too wide in the beginning. Maybe there will be a better chance of it actually getting implemented.

I would suggest talking with the Gnome guys about Conduit. Its the way to go. The developer summit coming up would be a great opportunity.
@Oceanwatcher - the problem is that if you don't at least develop a flexible framework with the big picture in mind then the finished product will be very limited. The Conduit guys recognised this, you can sync almost anything with anything using their framework.

There is a GSoC project for a Akonadi - SyncML client going on. Check this blog for more information: http://saschpe.wordpress.com/2009/06/02 ... ap-up/free

Nice to see that someone is working on that. Will this feature find its way to KDE 4.4?

Cell phones? too advanced for my needs. I just want to have an easy way to synchronize between a folder on a flash drive and a folder on my hard drive, including deleted files/directories!
Proudly dual-booting openSUSE 11.1 with KDE 4.3 and Windows Vista on a Toshiba A205-S4577 since July 2007.

I will add my vote to this proposal, but I would also like to suggest that the Gnome Conduit application be seriously considered as the model. I have a Kubuntu desktop system, a web server running Ubuntu Server, a laptop running Window7, and an external USB hard drive for full data backups, all with different locations for different sets of files that I want to sync up. Updates can frequently happen on other systems. The discussion here seems to be mainly focused on PIMs and smart phones, but many other devices are doubtless of concern as well, such as tablets and e-readers, online storage like photo servers, digital cameras, and probably many other devices as well. Having one easy-to-use application that would allow you to select the files/directory trees and any conversions, as well as selecting whether your syncs are single direction, dual direction based on date or other criteria, and automated or interactive, would be a fantastic savings in time and effort.
If voting is locked, is it correct to assume that this is accepted and under development? |

I think this is a great proposal, like the idea of it being done together with gnome developer on something like conduit!
I think this is essential in terms of encouraging , and making it easy, for people to avoid trusting the so called 'cloud' with their data - see the free software's post on 'services as a software substitute': http://www.gnu.org/philosophy/who-does- ... serve.html on some of the issues with the cloud! |

This would be a great idea. Sync between devices nowdays it's a must to have.
Would be fantastic if i could keep sync my whole KDE env between workstation at home, workstation at work , smartphone and tablet. Having a server which keeps updating informations from each device. Nothing different from the Firefox Sync Server http://docs.services.mozilla.com/howtos/run-sync.html The server needs to index all items from each device like: - KDE settings ( plasma settings, plasma widgets, kwin settings ) - KDE Apps settings - Files and activities Files might be not automatically moved from each device to another, would be possible just to activate a notice frame and eventually decide to sync files you want to. In that case the server will just act as a relay server or you would be able to use it as a data warehouse if the user decides to. |
