This is already in trunk as a patch I think sometime ago a Troll send the patch to kde-devel@kde.org.
The patch simply removes the text from the task panel and leaves the icons as is in there.

I think this idea is requesting that a thumbnail of the window be used, not an icon.

That would be accomplished by the compositing as normal just enable the effect. Otherewise its not possible technological afaik

I see a big problem though I like the idea generally:
Every improvement has at it's heart that you reach your goal with less clicks. The taskbar provides no-click access to all running tasks. If you place them on the desktop, you at least have to get the 'big' windows that run in the foreground out of the way, before you can access and maximize a 'thumbed' task back. that is simply one click too much. |

If this is plasma-based, it could either by put on the desktop or in a panel, eliminating that issue entirely.

oh come on!
how do you reach the desktop without click or keyboard? where is the difference to the taskbar if you put that in a panel? if you have thumbs in a panel, the whole appeal of the idea is gone. |

Why is the appeal gone? Having thumbnails in the panel seems like a good idea to me.
