This would probably be a theme-specific thing, but I think it would look really good if the transparent parts of plasmoids could blur whatever is behind them to varying extents.

I agree that this should be theme-specific. I as "creator" of Bare Naked theme like it just because plasmoids don't obstruct the view of Wallpaper.

KDE needs a better implementation of blur in general before this could be done.

Can't there be some generic "blur module" (and other effect modules) so that coude could be shared between KWin and Plasma? The two systems have a lot in common after all, and code duplication shouldn't be necessary...

Can't plasmoids be contained within (frameless, well-integrated) windows for instance? Then KWin effects would apply to them as well.

Also, something that would be really important:
Since very many plasma themes use 20% or less opacity for frames and backgrounds, the blur needs to be transparency-independent to some extent. If you alphablur something with 10% opacity, it won't look blurred at all, so it would be good to give that a thought.

@MirazD, I don't understand why it's impossible to just take Compiz's blur plugin and adapt it. It generates optimized shaders on-the-fly and works very well across a wide range of computers. If all of the compiz-specific stuff is removed, it should be usable, shouldn't it?

Using frameless / well integrated seperate windows is not an acceptable solution as the resource requirements would be considerably higher, and it would not be able to have translucent Plasmoids without compositing.

This should definitely be an option to enable/disable and not mandatory rule for all plasmoids.
