I think okular is a great multi-format reader, but it would be even greater if it was possible to open different documents in different tabs rather than in different instances of the program.
Maybe it's just the way I work but when I work with pdfs, I often need to work with several at once (or sometimes the same one but with different parts of the same document). It would be a great productivity booster if I could have them all opened in the same window.

A wonderful idea! This functionality would certainly add to okular's already impressive list of features.

Heh, yes that works albeit it's somewhat of a workaround really...

I personally consider Konqueror to be not a File Browser or a Web Browser but a "frame" into which you can stick anything but still have a consistent interface. The name "Swiss Knife" fits it really well.

Already reported wish, https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=155515 .
(Although, it does not mean it will be done soon, if it will ever.)

I find the lack of tabs highly irritating. When I have multiple Okular documents open it's impossible to tell, e.g. from the taskbar set on the left side or from smoothtasks, which document is which unless I mouseover Okular icons in turn to see which is which. This is an inefficient way of locating documents. The KWin equivalent of Expose (viz. Preview) works but this also seems like an inefficient way of locating documents. Having a single-instance tabbed Okular would be ideal (and at least the option!)

Use KWin's (if you use 4.5 or later) window-tabbing feature and my original idea is implemented. It would be better to have it in Okular itself so the tabs would work in a non-KDE environment as well but it is doable today.

KWin's grouping ("window tabbing") feature is not that convenient compared to native tabs in the program. One thing that would help here is to have automatic window grouping of similar windows ONLY FOR SPECIFIC PROGRAMS. As it is now, it automatically groups every window of similar type, whether those be Kate, Okular, etc. |

True. I didn't say it was perfect, only that it's possible. As for the "only for specific programs" idea, I do it like this: Create an application specific kwin-rule for the program in question (in this case okular). In the preference tab of the kwin-rules edit-window, check Autogroup by ID and set it to "Force". Give it an appropiate ID-name (say viewers). That way, okular and okular only will autogroup. As long as you only apply that kwin-rule (and the ID) to Okular that is.

This isn't perfect but it's nearly so. The only thing I don't like is that an alt+tab shows all windows as does the taskbar. Fortunately a hot corner using Preview lists only groups. Fabulous. |

Glad to be of help. As far as the taskbar goes, doesn't grouping (in the taskbar settings I mean) help regarding that? I use smooth tasks rather than the standard one but I have that one set to "group by program name" and that means I get only one icon no matter how many instances of okular are running (tabbed or not) in my taskbar.

I use smooth tasks as well. The problem with what you suggest is manifold. For one, grouping by program groups every program by name, rather than just Okular (as I'd desire). Second, a hover over the task using plasma tooltips doesn't show the title of the document, and things are only a bit better using the smooth tooltip. Anyway, thanks for your brilliant help. |
