I would like to seen other solution. Application might be able to add some elements to screen saver(ex. widget having window inside). When screen saver appear it playing the same movie.
Movie player should only asks user to disable screen blank on screen saver. Other solution is a role based on some think similar to PolicyKit or UAC like mechanism. Application asks PowerDevil to disable screen saver and user might be asked for this. It's not problem to answer first time we using some apps before we start playing movie on it.

While that is not implemented, the better solution I've got is switching the power profile to "Presentation" before playing any video.
By the way, that gave me an almost obvious idea: when a Phonon-based app started a video, it could also change the power profile to "Presentation". What do you think? |

I think it would be better to have a dedicated "video" or "multimedia" power profile.

In which ways would they be different from the "Presentation" profile?
Maybe we could just change the name "Presentation" to "Multimedia" - that englobates presentations. |

That would be up to the user. Profiles are configurable, and different users might want to have different power settings when doing presentations, watching video, and listening to music. For instance someone might want to turn off desktop effects for presentation but not for video or vice versus, or have the screen dim when music is playing but not when video or presentations are playing. For presentations where you are interacting with the computer often, having standy enabled may be a good thing, but not for video or music where you might not interact with the computer for an hour or two. The point is that there are plausible situations where a significant number of users might want them to be different, so I think KDE should be set up to allow for this instead of forcing everyone to make a single "multimedia" profile that doesn't have the optimal settings for the various situations.

Just for the record - Dragon Player now (SVN as of 5 minutes ago) does disable the screensaver. Test it.
Can I suggest we close this forum thread, and maybe start up a new one with the ideas that everyone is talking about now. |
