I would like to see a wizard, which starts at the first time you start KDE. It would allow to set information like name, location, email data and so on. It could also allow to set the settings like the widget style or the numbers of the virtual desktops, activities and so on.

IT should also have an import settings and data tools.

The best at least:
  • Import your data and settings
  • Adapt View and Look to your needs
  • Set up power options
  • Set up network
  • Set up other important settiongs
  • Came from Windows? No problem! Ex Windows user guide

I think it could be a plasma widget. Some distributions may set this to default activity, but other not.

What should be displayed on it? Links to [Desktop Type] Settings, Control Center, Dolphin File Manager Settings, KWin Settings, etc.

I have dejavu now. I think I see somethink like that in some mockup.

Also there should have one more option : Do you like black theme or white theme?

there should be an option to save the made settings to a usb device.. or to import from usb device... it would be an easy way to restore all desktop settings without saving the whole /home dir

The wizard will be a great improvement and comparable to features new users are acquainted with in various forums they already use. I really like the usb saving feature as well for simple backup use.

@waldelf: Nice idea: +1, this would allow to set the same settings to a lot of KDE desktops. You just have to copy the configuration files to them.

I can see that a lot of people will like this, but I'd propose one difference. I would like the wizard to start with a question - "Would you like to choose your configuration now, or start with default settings? (You will be able to make changes later.)". The reason I say this is that anyone new to linux in general and kde in particular probably won't know what configuration settings are going to suit them. I think real newbies, like that, would be happier starting with defaults.

@annew : Nice idea with that, this is something good for both people, the ones that don't want to configure anything and just want a desktop, and for the ones who wants to configure everything.

This idea is already implemented in Pardus distribution . It is called Kaptan.

For the screenshot see this:
http://en.pardus-wiki.org/Pardus:Instal ... rom_Kaptan

You can download it from here:
http://svn.pardus.org.tr/uludag/trunk/kde4/kaptan4/

It is written in Python :)

It looks nice, but it is Pardus specific, isn't it?
Thanks for mentioning it.

Yes to some degree unfortunately. But at least there is something to build on it :)
