Hi !
I suggest Phonon make possible the interactive gestion of sound for all the applications using it. I think Phonon should speak with the applications so they can asks particular things to him, like muting all the others applications (Dragon Player for example), or when you're making a voice call... Or giving application more or less loud volume regarding the which desktop is the current one, or which application has the focus, or which ones are fullscreened. Is it possible for Phonon to evolute that way ? |

I think you are after a sound server really... although Phonon could register a standard DBus interface which a central Phonon daemon could send commands to in order to lower volumes, etc. But that would only work for Phonon enabled apps.

The best would be auto auto level adjustment by getting environment sound via mic, so if you are in noisy environment you bet thing louder, if in quiet place, not so loud sound

Or even better, to look, if user is in front of PC (via webcam, if available).
So if user is in front of PC mute all sound notifications, of away play sounds, or even speak names of friend, who send you a message. |

Yeah, that whould be great ! I'm very annoyed by useless sound when I'm in front on the screen, so I disable them all, but I would like to have them when away from the computer ! |

So can dbus interaction between applications handle this?

Wouldn't it be better to check the user input (mouse, keyboard) to see if you're at the computer? Anyway, good idea |

Pulseaudio already does all this, try mandriva 2010 which has a lot of pulseaudio/phonon patches to make stuff like this work correctly
