I think it would be worthwhile having a progress bar in Dolphin telling you how many of the previews for a folder have been loaded if Dolphin determines it is going to take a long time.

Yes, i think is usefull, but the (small) problem is where it can be put! Not at the place of the "thumbnails size slider" (i don't know how to describe this in english!), because while all thumbnails are loading the user can want to use it.

If you use the address bar...but with the Breadcrumb navigation bar?

Firefox doesn't display the progress in the address bar by default, that is done with an extension called fission.
There are four places I can think of to put it. One is just in a blank space in the status bar at the bottom. The second is in place of the "free space" bar at the bottom. The third is in place of the file count on the far left of the status bar. The fourth is at the far right of the breadcrumb navigator, shrinking any breadcrumbs that need to be moved out of the way to make space.

Open file dialog in konq. While loading dir content a progress bar is shown in the bottom left corner. The same could be done in dolphin. Might be same code reused.

That space is currently taken up by some text displaying the number of files.
