With KDE desktop effects enabled I've got rid of my taskbar - using alt-tab or present windows is simply a more effective way for me to manage my windows than a cluttered taskbar. However, I miss the taskbar for just one feature: dragging an item from a window, hovering over another window's taskbar entry until that window appears and then dropping it into the second window. What I'd like to see is:
-start dragging an item -go to the corner of the screen that activates present windows (or use a keyboard shortcut) -drag the item on to the target window while present windows is active and release mouse key to drop it on the window -the target window gets focus (closes present windows effect) and the normal copy/move/cancel dialog comes up No idea if this is possible and yes I know I can use cut and paste as an alternative. Maybe I'm the only person out there without a taskbar? |

Changed tag to [Kwin].
You aren't alone. The netbook interface, for example, has ditched the taskbar in favor of the Present Window effect. |

Thanks. Not sure what I was thinking tagging it [Plasma] What's the overall idea here with the brainstorm - who pushes an idea to bugzilla and when? (I've read the FAQ). Obviously anyone can file a bug/wishlist item at any time but the brainstorm seems like a good filtering process so are there any general criteria set out? |

+1 I like the idea
and maybe if you drag a file on a KOffice window then the document is loaded, if you drag a music file etc... etc... |

There are other taskbar functions that could be useful in Present windows:-
1) Alt-F4 to close the window the mouse is over 2) right click to show kwin menu for that window (the one you normally get by clicking on the icon on the title bar) so you can do things like send to different desktop, Close (as in point 1), and all the other window controls. |

Another way to do this might be to provide a present-windows plasmoid/button (rather than a hot corner). Use: drag to present-windows button then drag and drop on destination application.
Advantage of this approach is that, when effects are disabled (no present windows... power management will still turn off desktop effects on occations) a list of open apps can be opened instead and the item droped onto the required window via this list A buton / panel item is nice also in that the feature is no longer "invisible" to users who don't know about it.

Been away for a bit...
@ Lukas - yeah, that's not quite what I had in mind but it would do the job I think. @ andre_orwell (on 21 July). Yes, having somewhere visible to drag to could be good, as you say desktop effects might not be on all the time (e.g. for the netbook extending battery life by switching off some bling) |
