Hi all,

Kopete needs a way to select the preferred protocol used to chat.
For example, I have a contact who has MSN and Skype. Of course, I have merged this contact. When I start a chat with this contact Kopete auto-selects the protocol used. I would like to have the control on this, so that I can select the protocol Kopete uses for the chat.

Best regards...

there should be an explicit option.
anyway, i believe it always chooses the first one available (from left to right according to the protocol icons for each contact): before the feature is implementated you could just split the your merged contacts and then again merge them this way: click on the contact that you DON'T want as default, right click -> metacontact -> chose the contact you want as default

worked for me this way

Clicking on the username always chooses the first available protocol available, yes.

But you can also click on the preferred protocol icon from your contact to launch a corresponding chat window.

And it is exactly this what I want to avoid. A simple option in the "Right-Click"->"Preferences" dialog will do it.

+1!

But there should be an order of accounts and not of protocols, because I've also multiple Jabber- and ICQ-accounts.

That would be completely great. ATM Kopete also opens the "first" protocol, even if the user is only online in the "second" one.

Rather than a right click -> preferences dialog, why not make the preferred protocol settable in two ways:
-make the account icons draggable such that when one is clicked and dragged, the cursor changes to the drag cursor, the other icons separate to make space for the hovered new location of whichever icon, and maybe a little box for where it will go
-add a "set account preference order" checkbox to the metacontact properties which, when unchecked reverts to the current behavior. In this state, the individual account icons should automatically reorder to reflect the availability determining preference. When the box is checked, it should expand/enable a listbox with the usual up/down arrows, top entry bolded and appended with (default) etc.

Is this the same thing?

I don't use Kopete so I don't know what a metacontact is but it sounds the same.
