As a scientist, I like using okular quite a bit until it comes to highlighting, selecting text from journal articles. Nearly every scientific research report is formatted into columns. However, when trying to highlight or select text from such reports, okular clumsily selects the text from the neighboring column, whereas adobe acrobat (>8.0) displays no such issue. I would like to see the okular devs add column recognition in the near future. This feature is essential if the devs hope to see this program gain wider acceptance from the scientific community.

I definetly agree with you.

Discussions regarding the poppler bug that seems to be the root cause of this (still no fix):

https://bugs.launchpad.net/poppler/+bug/33288

https://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=3188

and.. the not-so-helpful comments (more like hysterical rantings) from the maintainer of poppler

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=161324#c15

*sigh* it looks like the fix will not be forthcoming. This is sad since I like to see okular gain a wider adoption rate because it is simply better than adobe's offering. However, this bug is a massive show-stopper for scientists around the world. I guess I have to use foxit through wine in the meantime.
