I have seen this feature on MacOS X yesterday for the first time and i love it. I find it even nicer than having different icons for different folders, which can look kinda crowded sometimes.
Anyway what is this? Colored labels allow the user to define a "label" of a set of colors that are associated with some topic. Dolphin already implements many of finders features (sidebar, columns) - the labels would be really nice to have too. Here is what it looks like in action: http://www.ucs.ed.ac.uk/usd/cts/ol/os/m ... abels.html

While I've never found this to be an attractive feature, I see why it could be useful

That label background chaing is nice for normal files. But for folders we can use the different colored icons. And there is on kde-apps/kde-look.org site the script what allows user to do what I suggest.
http://kde-apps.org/content/show.php/Co ... tent=34096 The labels thing would be nice as well for normal users. And it could allow later nice way to link with nepomuk calender view or other possible features so user could see from label color the version. update: fixed the wrong link to correct one.

That isn't a script, it is just an idea. If you download it you just get a picture.

Color is indeed a very effective way to quickly find something. I use a color code for my folders : green=pictures, purple=documents, red=downloads... but the recently added feature that create small thumbnails on the folder icon for directory which contains images broke this setting.
With colored label, it could work and keep the cool thumbnails (I think this is a mission for Nepomuk...)

the preview of content of a folder in KDE 4.3 broke this option. The folder revert for the default color when the thummail of the content are loaded. hum... someone had reported this bug? in this topic we have a bug and a wish. The wish is a simple interface for change the color os the folders and i think "a servicemenu" |

As much that sounds as just fix for this (as the script what I offered to easy that function), it is much difficult thing to do always go to properties, click folder icon, select "places" and then select correct one, click OK and then again OK. On Mac OS X the coloring happends just from context menu by selecting colored small ball what all are on same entryline. http://etc.usf.edu/te_mac/files/i/labels1.jpg http://www.petercooper.co.uk/wp-content ... 12/org.jpg When organizing files on Mac OS X, it is easy http://mac.appstorm.net/how-to/os-x/vis ... g-in-os-x/ You do not just set color for folders, but for all files as well. You can set custom names for every color so you can mark them easily as "Important" with red and "temporally" with gray and "done" with green. The folder colors is not just the only thing what this is about but all files. We can not do colored versions of all data files but the text itself would allow it. And as you can see from screenshots, the colored name background is much faster way to notice than the colored icon itself, even when lots of data. That is one thing what makes tree view on Finder so great organizer. Dolphin could be as well http://img263.imageshack.us/i/dolphinco ... iesfi.png/ (that is just the entries of folders. Not with normal files or folder icons changed). We already have the folder color changing for marking them to be easier way to be spotted. But we do not have a way to mark files. Gnome has embedded icons for that. But the Apple's way is better. The service menu what I linked could be fixed for KDE4. But it is still broken for preview as mentioned. And can not help situation with all files, only with folders. |
