It would be nice, if there was an option in the menu editor (right click on the application launcher -> Menu Editor) to deactivate the desktop effects before several applications are started. This could be used for applications like Marble, Google Earth, games (Glest, and so on) etc. You wouldn't have to deactivate the effects at your own.

It is a good idea...
this should already happen for fullscreen applications. also alt + shift + f12 is the quickest way to turn compositing on and off. |

KWIN could automatically disable effects once full screen window is created or some window is switched to full screen mode(takes whole screen and disable wm decorators).

Vista does this, but with DRI2 we don't really need this - I think.

Personally, I'm for this idea all the way - presentations work noticeably smoother when desktop effects are off, from my experience, as well as graphics-intensive openGL applications (Enemy Territory: Quake Wars, anyone?)

Perhaps rather than a setting in the menu entry, this should go in the application-specific settings: disable compositing when open/active. As long as there is at least one window/application running which has that flag then compositing effects are disabled but are re-enabled when the last window/app is closed that has that flag.

I think desktop effects are useful for presentation.. If this can be configurable for each application separately, it would be nice.

I think this will be useful only for "bad" drivers, but as these drivers exist now, it would be great to have realisation of this idea.

An entry in a .desktop file disabling desktop effects while the application runs could be a solution.

@dpalacio
Yes, that would be a good way. |

I think this option is for the Window Specific properties of an application and added/edited as such.
