The idea is as follows:

When you drop an item on a taskbar entry there is a drop signal sent to the application with the data that was dropped. The application can handle the data any way that it sees fit. They key here is that the application accepting the data does not necesarily focus.

The current alternative is to hold your drag over the taskbar item and wait for the application to focus. You then drop whatever you want in the place

Some samples of possible uses:

- drop a URL on konqueror then it loads that URL. -
- Drop a File on dolphin in gives the same move/copy option as if files are being copied.
- Drop Dolphin onto dolphin closes one dolphin instance and loads the second one's location as a tab in the first

I would appreciate some feedback here because I realise that an incorrect implementation of this feature can compromise usability. But a correct implementation can make KDE much more intuitive and user friendly(in my opinion).

I don't like this idea because a lot of applications handle dropped content differently based on where in the application you drop it. This would result in inconsistency since the user can't tell what exactly would happen when it is dropped, and is not given a visual queue as to what happened once it was.

I agree with your argument and for that reason this should only be implemented in cases where dropping an object on a task-bar entry would have an obvious associated action or in the case of multiple possible actions a menu can pop up in a similar style as when you drop a file in dolphin and it gives the move/copy option. If I drop a torrent link on KTorrent the download dialog should appear as usual, so there isn't some mysterious or default action taking place.

If i drop a video file on dragon player there is really only one obvious action it can take which is to play the video.

I also think it would be a good idea to focus some applications(like dragon player) when this happens, applications like Amarok could however just enqueue and play the files dropped onto it.

And how would this work for grouped items?

Click on the group, drag the item out onto the other taskbar item, or if your trying to drag into a group, drag the item onto the group... it expands the group allowing you to drop the item on a specific taskbar entry.

I don't see much use for dragging groups, but if someone can see a practical use for this the input would be great.
