another rather simple thing which annoys me regularly a bit:
when i delete an email, what i do sometime, i also happen to delete emails that are still tagged 'unread' and highlighted that way and and! the folder they are in shows the count of them. problem: this also applies to the garbage folder! which makes no sense in my opinion. I continuously have 'unread' email in my garbage folder. ;) Ok, this is something for perfectionists, that from time to time have to see their analyst. But it annoys me. Why should I want the information that i have to read 15 emails in my garbage folder, emails for which i already decided that i am not interested in them at all?? So the idea is as simple as this: when i delete an email in kmail i'd find it useful if it would at the same time be marked as 'read' and not as 'new' anymore. |

'Mark all messages as read' is more normally found by right-clicking on the folder in question. You can move all messages to trash from there too.

Thanks, but I figure if he does not know where "Folder" is, he probably don't know how to use right click other menus.

If your annoyance is how it shows unread messages in the systray icon, right click on your trash folder, properties, and uncheck "Act on new/unread mail in thie folder". That way the systray won't include "unread" items from the Trash folder.
You can also solve your problem using filters. Settings -> Configure filters. Create a new filter on the left. You now have one of two options: 1) Match all/any of the following and set Message status is Deleted 2) Then at the botttom Mark as Read. However depending on your email setup it may or may not be marked as deleted, so here is another option which replicates the exact functionality you want: 1) Match all/any of the following and don't put any criteria at all. This means it will match all messages it comes across. 2) At the bottom set Mark as Read. 3) At the bottom click "more", then set Move into folder and select your trash folder. 4) Move to the advanced tab and uncheck the "Apply this filter to incoming messages" checkbox. This is so that you won't have it affecting all your newly received messages. 5) Check the "Add this filter to the apply filter menu" 6) Basically what you're doing is replicating the "delete" option. So you can add a shortcut and use your delete key as usual. Just remember to resolve conflicting shortcuts. 7) To increase the level of integration, you can check "Additionally add this filter to the toolbar". Choose the trash icon. 8) Confirm all options. 9) To remove the original trash icon on the toolbar you may right click on the toolbar and click "Configure toolbars", then layout it however you want. Here are some other options you might be interested in to ease your pain Settings -> Configure KMail -> Misc -> Empty local trash folder on program exit Settings -> Configure KMail -> Accounts -> Receiving -> Modify -> Advanced -> Trash folder ... and of course, like already said above by annew and bobcollard right click on your trash folder in the folder list on the left, and click Mark all messages as read. (Note this option is only available if there are unread messages).

Thanks! Exactly what i'm trying to accomplish right now.
I think there is a way to filter tagged messages also, but i can't find how, any hints? |

Mault's solution is clever, but it does not really work if you have more than one IMAP account with their respective 'trash' folders. That would require two (or more) different 'delete' buttons to dispose of email in each account, which is not very functional or elegant. I still think that the original idea - to mark deleted emails as read (or to make sure that the simple filter to mark deleted emails as read works, which is not the case for me) - is the way to go.

I think it is better if the count is not shown rather than marking all messages as read automatically, like what GMail does (without the 30-day thingy).
This way, when you do visit the trash someday you'll know what you've read and trashed and what went in directly (or accidentally). |

+1 to QwertyManiac, it solves the "annoyance", as well as maintains the information.

I'm not exactly sure why, but I like to know that I deleted emails without reading them. If this becomes a feature that's okay, just as long as it's optional.

+1 for having an option to automatically mark emails as read when moved to trash. The filter rules do not work.

The desired functionality would be easy to add if filter rules could be limited to specific folders.
You could just add a filter: if message is in (account1->trash, or account2->trash) then mark as read. I think that would satisfy everyone, and add useful (if rarely used) functionality. |
