When switching from KDE 3 to KDE 4 the print preview option was eliminated. Now it is up to each application to enable the printing preview.
At first let me say: It is a big advantage that print preview now can simply be activated within the applications itself. So we do have an interface that works and it is simple to activate "print preview". (That is, what I was told) But on the other hand the option print preview within the KPrinter menu was one of the biggest advantages of printing within Linux compared to other operating systems. 1. Current situation (KDE 4.3.2) Currently most of the standard KDE applications did not activate the option "Print Preview" in the file menu, e.g.: - Konqueror - KMail - Kate In fact currently I cannot find one KDE application that uses print preview. This is a disadvantage compared to earlier KDE versions. 2. Option 1: Have both options activated. If both, the application itself and the printing dialog offer a print preview there is nothing wrong about that, at least as long as situation 1. is the most often found. 3. Option 2: If the application acivates the option "print preview" this could inactivate the option in the printing dialog. I would prefer Option 1 but for reasons of consistency you might use Option 2. Konqueror 4.5.1 does not have a print preview feature. I find this to be a significant and considerable disadvantage in comparison to other browsers (Internet Explorer 6+, Opera 8+, Firefox 1+, Safari 3+, Seamonkey 1+).

Maybe the print window could display the print preview on the side as well, similar to what AutoCAD or Office 2010 does.

Three notes:
a) strictly speaking, there's no "KDEPrint" in KDE 4 b) even in KDE 3 applications could have a "print preview" menu entry on their own (and some did) c) Okular has the "print preview" in its File menu

Hi folks,
just to emphasize this once more: I do not criticise this technical solution to simply add a print preview dialog directly into KDE applications. But there should a l w a y s be a print preview option. That is what we had before and I really think it to be a disadvantage that this is gone, especially as the application owners do not focus on this question. By the way: How many votes do we need to give this idea a higher priority? Chrome 13.0.782.112 has been released this week and it has a print preview feature.
This means that Konqueror 4.7.0 is the only acid2-test compliant web browser which does not have a print preview feature. Gérard |
