A lot of wifi hotspots, such as those at hotels, will redirect any web traffic to a login page until you login. Others will redirect you to a page with instructions on how to configure the connection, such as with vpn or 802.1x. This means things like email and chat will not work unless you manually open a web browser first.
Wireless connections in KDE are handled by the networkmanager plasma widget. Plasma also has built-in web browser capabilities. I think it would be very handy if, when connecting to a wireless router, networkmanager automatically checks for a redirect of this sort and, if it finds one, pops up a plasma web browser just so you can login or read the instructions. This would close automatically as soon as the login is complete.
