using inches in KWord

Tue Jan 13, 2009 11:50 pm
I didn't find a KWord or KOffice forum here, so I'm guessing this is the best forum for a KWord question. I just got KOffice installed and running today on my Ubuntu Linux PC, and I'm liking it quite a bit thus far. I'll be using the letter (8 1/2 by 11 inches) format since I'm in the United States. However, the rulers in KWord are set in centimeters. I would rather have them set in inches since that is the unit standard letter sized paper is based on.

I've been searching through the KWord handbook and have been googling this topic, but haven't had any luck finding the answer.

How do you set KWord to inches instead of centimeters?

I believe KWord follows your KDE user settings. Which version of KWord are you using though? If it is 1.x, then you can use KControl ( KDE Control Center ) which is part of KDE 3. If it is 2.x, then you can use systemsettings ( System Settings ) which is part of KDE 4.

the setting is usually located somewhere under "Country" or "Localisation"

I'm using KWord 1.6.3, and it reports KDE version 3.5.10. I'm in Ubuntu Linux 8.04. I take it Ubuntu automatically installs a KDE version so that KDE apps can run under it? KWord must not have gotten its region settings from Ubuntu because that OS is set to United States/Central Time.

Edit: I just found it. I was able to change it within KWord. I used:

Settings ===> Configure KWord ===> Interface

The choice was right there on a menu that included some other things too such as points, Pica, and some other things.

Thank you for your help. :-)

As you have solved it, please add a [SOLVED] to the title. Thanks.

Alternatively, to change it in an single document, right click in the tab bar and all the options will appear.

In KOffice 2.x, the template page gives the option of selecting inches (though it's not the default), but once a document is open, there is no way to change the unit of measure. It is also impossible to select the units on the predefined templates in KWord.

I have also noticed that while the page ruler is in inches, the page properties still say millimeters.

As far as I can see, KOffice pays no attention to units set in System Settings.

If inches is set as your unit in System Settings, and KOffice is not following it, I would consider that a bug, that should be reported at bugs.kde.org.
