Is it possible to open them in any way?

I am able to open some of them but it looks horrible and does not really work.

Its is not really implemented yet or is it just a bad support for PPT

I use openoffice.org (Shipped by default in Kubuntu) to open and edit PPT files.

Depends a bit on the version you are using. The support for ppt is certainly not perfect (if that's even possible), but is improved all the time so newer versions might work better. If that's not the case, you can file a bug about it.
