Document contains Heading 1 and Heading 2 and Normal styles. Inserting a table of centents, either in the text or in a text box simply provides teh heading "Table of Contents" but no table. If I manage to create the table of centents can I convert the fields to text and save the table as a new file? I had no problem doing this in MS Word.

My guess is that is down the line; there are a lot of incomplete features at the moment. If you want that sort of feature with even less work than MS Word, try LyX.
