Disable KWord docker

Mon May 31, 2010 1:19 pm
I don't use any of the dockers in KWord. I notice that all but the KWord docker cannot be closed from the GUI, which is itself very puzzling. Is there any other way of closing it so that I can free up some screen space?

4.5 beta refers to the KDE SC 4.5 Beta, which is currently at version 2 ( ie. KDE SC 4.5 Beta 2 )

I know, but what does that have to do with Kword's docker feature, which has nothing to do with the systray?

I think he mistook what was meant by 'KWord docker' which is an annoying side panel in KWord that is impossible to hide or close and wastes a ton of screen space.

I am also interested in an answer to this question as I find the waste of screen space very annoying.

There is currently no way to hide the toolbox. Close button is turned of in the code.

Currently you cannot close it -- and if you could, it would be hard to get it back -- but you can make it smaller, only one icon wide. Then it doesn't take much space anymore. Or you can dock it to the top, under the toolbar, where it will take as much space as an ordinary toolbar.

Good news for all screen space savers: I have just commited a new toggle to hide/show all dockers. Feature will be in 2.3 :)

Spectacular!! (The hide docker function.)

This is one of the reasons I have been avoiding using Koffice for now.

I posted this in the issue of screen saving:

I hate forums - mostly because of the people on them.

The three kinds of people I hate are the ones who:

1. Don't have a social life and are clueless about the subject matter and it's resolution - and they gaily chat pointlessly about it anyway - thus wasting time and space.

2. The people who say "OH I am not affected by this, so I can't see what your problem is".

3. Or the people who say "Oh you should be doing this" and "Oh you should be doing that" and they don't have a clue about what must be done.....

And they don't like bing told to shut their stupid faces, and to keep their **** to themselves.

You either have THE SOLUTION - or you keep your trap shut.

OK to the issue:

I use word 2000 and 2003. I have developed my own single menu bar for it, that has 3 states of zoom, activates the scanner and a whole bunch of necessary stuff - all from one flat, narrow, single layer, menu bar - - at the top of the screen.

I tend to produce documents that are 200 - 300 pages long.

I do not like any **** taking up my screen space.

Microsofts brilliant move of making "The Ribbon" as the standalone premium feature of a **** repackaged version of Office 2003 - without recourse to minimisation or the old style menu bar; was the absolutely stupidest move ever.

The Microsoft Ribbon took up 1/3 of my vertical working space, to keep options open that I did not want to see, or use, with no way to get rid of them.

Microsoft and their perpetual stupidity - that was the very last straw.

The KWORD menu bar as is - that suits me.

"The Dockers"- they are not a bad way to work - but I only want to see them or use them, when I want too or when I need too.

Having the K-word "docker" stuck up permanently on screen, with no way to switch it off, this drives me insane.

What piece of code do I need to hack to get rid of it?

As a suggestion; "The bright idea of one switch turning on all the lights in the house at the one time - is only a bright idea IF your paying the electricity bills - as for me, I only need the light on, in the room that I am in".

Having "forced on you" features, depending upon their stupidity - can easily be enough of a deal breaker to dump the product.

Microsoft Office 07 - and the idiot ribbon menu bar; those disks now sit in a landfill.

Your dockers - they are a vertical equivalent of MS's idiot ribbon interface.

Since there is no OFF to the Kword docker - again - what piece of coding do I need to hack to remove it.?

As I wrote earlier in this thread it will be possible to turn off the docker in 2.3. So you can either compile if yourself or wait for the next release which is planned to be in two months.
