Okay, maybe I'm blind or it doesn't exist yet...but is it possible to turn off the creation of the filename.odt~ files when you save a changed document?

That is a great question :)

I know it use to be under the Settings -> Configure Kword, but i seem unable to put my finger on it for koffice-2.1.0

I will look into this a bit more.

Hmm...I'm using 2.2.0 and I don't even have a Configure kword under settings (or anywhere else). I can change what toolbars and dockers are shown, configure autocorrect and change tracking, and the standard configure toolbars and configure shortcuts.

However, I noticed there are "Configure kspread" and "Configure kpresenter" in those apps. Seems odd the different programs of the suite behaves differently in that manner.

Appears to be a bug. I can't imagine that to be a"feature".

Sigh.

I was this close to starting to use Kword, again.

I feel more like I do now than I did when I got here.

equally as odd that the /usr/share/apps/kword/kword.rc has a line entry in the Settings menu for <Action name="configure" group="settings_configure"/>.
similar is found in the kspread.rc, <Action name="preference" group="settings_configure"/>

the std output of kword doesn't reflect settings being rejected. odd.

... still digging

I was just about going to file a bug for it, but found one in place already:

FWIW i think this happens not only with kword but koffice (2.2 here) in general.
I was editing some image files with krita the other day and a day later i was surprised to find the directory full of backup files.
I just run into this thread and i might jump into conclusions, but it seemed related.

PS. i havent bothered to check the menus, and i cant atm, but will surely look into it later. Even if the ability to keep backup files can be considered a feature, i cant imagine how that would be the default behaviour.

Indeed, same thing happens with odt in kword, ods in kspread
and png's and jpg's in krita.

Only kspread has an option to disable creation of backup files in Settings->Configure Kspread->Open/Save

Here's the report for krita: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=242316
