I'm running PCLinuxOS withKDE 4.4.5. I'd like to install Koffice. The version availalbe in the rpo is KOfice 2.2.1-1pclos2010. PcLinuxOS also has anupdate for KDE 4.5 avaialble.

I'm holding off on doing the KDE upgrade for the moment. I'm just wondering if I can still install KOffice and have it run under KDE 4.4.5. Or does this version of KOffice need KDE 4.5?

No, KOffice can run on KDE 4.4. I'm not familiar with that package system, but it might be possible that the package requires 4.5.

I guess my question is,is Koffice integrated into KDE to the extent that it needs the correct vesrion of KDE in order to run?

For instance,OpenOffice is going to run regardless of the version of KDE. The same with Koffice?

Versions compiled for lower KDE versions run on higher versions, but not the other way round. You can try to simply install KOffice from your package manager and it will tell you if you need to upgrade.

Not saying anything about a KDE upgrade. I'm downloading and installing now.:)

KOffice doesn't need KDE the desktop at all, it just has a dependency on some KDE-libs. Like any libraries we have a minimum version required and thats 4.4 at this time.

This means that if you ask your linux installation application (package manager) to install KOffice it might want to force the kdelibs package to be installed to. But it won't force you to switch from Gnome if you were running that :)

In general; I suggest to just try the install and check which extra libraries your package manager wants to install before saying "Ok" :)
