Hello,

The system is running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (lucid).
I've downloaded "koffice_2.1.2.orig.tar.bz2"

Extracted the files into a folder on the desktop called koffice.

I know the easy way to do this is by typing "sudo apt-get install kspread" (kspread is the only application I'm really looking for), however I'm trynig to make a Offline update CD, so we can get a system up and running to our specifications without internet access.

All dependicies for Koffice have been installed on the machine, according to ubuntu.packages.com (something like that)

I've read the readme and I really can't decipher the instructions :S They seem very complex. I am not a noob when it comes to computers, but I am a Ubuntu/linux noob :)

I keep wishing for that "install.exe" I see on windows computers :S Hehe, the easy way :)

Please any suggestions are welcome :) I can change version numbers or whatever to get this working :)

I am not an Ubuntu expert either. But if you want to make an update CD, wouldn't it make more sense to use the existing packages instead of building from sources?

My approach would be to apt-get install kspread and then note carefully which packages are downloaded and installed. Then put those same packages on your CD.

Another question: Wouldn't it make more sense to use version 2.2.2 (the latest stable version) instead of 2.1.2? That is a rather old version with many bugs. And if you still want to install from sources, I suggest 2.3 beta1 that was released yesterday. That one has a number of nasty bugs fixed, and even if it is a beta version, I think it will make you more happy.

Thanks ingwa for the reply :)

I like you're idea of seeing which packages apt-get will download. However, I'm not sure where these packages are kept, or if they are once the installer is done with them?

Also, If I did manage to make a CD with correct packages, what command line would I use on a separate machine instead of "apt-get install kspread"?

Unfortunately, this is where my non-expertize of Ubuntu starts to be a problem. :-)

On a RPM based system, it would have been:

rpm -F *.rpm

if executed while standing in the directory of the CD where the updated packages are.

rpm -F means "update those packages which already have older versions installed", and you would have to find the equivalent option for the dpkg command, which is the counterpart to rpm in Ubuntu.

I would suggest you to start Synaptic package manager, than go to the preferences thereof and make your CD a repository :)
The easy way - as you wanted it :)
