Is it usable or not - Koffice

Tue Jan 04, 2011 8:29 pm
Hi!

I am OO user still and I like switch to Koffice but wherever I red was" it is not usable for average user" What this "average user" is? I am using OS X and MS office at work and many times I bring work to home and OO ha no problems to continue work and vice versa. How should be if I try to do this with Koffice? Or is Koffice just for entusiasts and testers?
BTW, I am a KDE user from first version of KDE and I remember Koffice from first version and the problem was all the time same: not usable for average users.

Thanks.

It depends on what application you want to use. Krita is supposed to be ready for use by professional artists. kspread is also supposed to be at a level where it is considered usable. kword and kpresenter, however, don't have user interfaces with the design or features that are needed for it to be considered usable (like missing formatting options).

However, if your focus is on MS Office documents none of them are useable and may never be, since koffice can only read (not write) MS office documents. Last I heard there were no plans to implement writing of MS office documents, although this may have changed since then.

If you use ODF with MS Office I would like to say you are fine with kspread, since recent versions of MS Office support ODF. Unfortunately Microsoft intentionally designed Excel to break formulas in ODF spreadsheets. I don't know if kspread can handle this well or not, so I can't recommend using kspread for you, either.

Yes, I am using Word and PowerPoint and I don't have with conversion at home on OO for FreeBSD and vice versa. This mean tha Koffice is not usable and the future is not so clear...
It is sad that Krita is not application by it's own. The future will be better if Krita became a standalone application because install the whole Koffice just for Kritta is not an option for me and maybe not just for myself.

You shouldn't need to install all of koffice just for krita. I know on openSUSE you can install only the applications you want.

Also, the various koffice applications share a lot of underlying code. This saves a lot of work, since changes made for the benefit of one application can often also be of benefit to others. So if krita split off on its own it wouldn't be able to benefit from the contributions of the rest of the suite.
