Segmentation fault

Thu Aug 04, 2011 7:33 pm
I am getting the following error
Executable: k3b PID: 9076 Signal: 11 (Segmentation fault)
when I try to open K3B ver 2.01 in Ubuntu 10.10 64 bit.
I have used K3B without issue for several months but now it won't open and produces the above error. I can use K3b through terminal using a sudo command but this is not particularly secure or the way I wish to use it.
Any help would be appreciated

there's 4 k3b rc files in ~/.kde/share/config can you move/rename/delete them and try again (or try as a user other then root to determine if the problem is a corrupted rc file)

what messages are displayed if you start k3b in a terminal window

Thanks for your reply,

I found one K3b rc file in the home directory which I renamed . I tried restarting K3B same result. I also found rc files in the root directory but did not see k3b rc files there. I am having difficulty attaching images photobucket does not seem to work with my system so I will list the files in
~/.kde/share/config manually: katepartpluginsrc, katepartscriptrc, katesyntaxhighlightingrc, kcmaudiocdrc, kconf_updaterc, kcookiejarrc, kdebugrc ,kdedrc, kdeglobals, kio_httprc, kioslaverc, kuriikwsfilterrc ,kwriterc, phonondevicesrc, plasma-appletsrc, plasmarc, plasmoidviewer-appletsrc. I am guessing that none of these files are related to K3B. The output from the sudo k3b command is this:

[email protected]:~$ sudo k3b
[sudo] password for david:
Sorry, try again.
[sudo] password for david:
QMetaObject::invokeMethod: No such method K3b::Application::loadCommandLineOptionsForNewInstance()
[email protected]:~$ k3b(11682)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_projects" with KXMLGUIFactory!
k3b(11682)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_dir_tree" with KXMLGUIFactory!
k3b(11682)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "view_contents" with KXMLGUIFactory!
k3b(11682)/kdeui (kdelibs): Attempt to use QAction "location_bar" with KXMLGUIFactory!

K3b then asks if I want to change permissions by going to K3b setup-KDE Control Module. At that point the output I listed from the terminal is followed by "false"

I tried changing the permissions but it did not make a difference and I was not sure of what I was doing.

the k3b rc files (on my system) are: k3b.eventsrc k3b.notifyrc k3brc k3bsetuprc if you don't have them don't worry

please paste output from the k3b command run as you in terminal where it seg faults

also if you can create and login as a different non-root user and see if k3b runs it would be helpful

If I understand correctly you want terminal output when I enter "k3b run" in terminal.
Here it is:

I created another account on my Ubuntu system and was able to run K3b from the applications drop down menu as I usually do. That is to say, this time K3b opened up without the segmentation fault occurring.

One other thing and this may not be relevant. I upgraded the kernel using a program called KernelCheck. I found I had problems with the new kernel and removed it through Synaptic ; I am presently using Linux 2.6.35.28
I apologize if the output I posted is not what you want; could you explain what you mean by "output from the k3b command run as you in terminal where it seg faults" if I didn't understand correctly

Tried the command but it did not appear to work. I usually use the sudo command in ubuntu. Not quite sure if the set of commands are correct for ubuntu

sorry don't use the *buntu's, and the command wasn't correct anyhow

try
sudo chown -R david /home/david/.kde/

this will change recursively the ownership to david of the directory and any files/folders within it

That worked, Many thanks. I posted on the Ubuntu forum a week ago and got no response, you responded right away with help.

Best wishes
