KDE 4.6 various possible bugs

Fri Nov 26, 2010 11:14 pm
Hi all!

So, I installed 4.6 beta 1 today and I am quite impressed at how stable it is compared to the 4.5 betas. However, I have faced some issues which might either be bugs or just something that needs configuring. I thought I'd ask here before I go through the bug submission process. If you need more info, I will try to provide it.

I am running Arch Linux with testing repos enabled for core and community and kde-unstable (obviously). All packages are fully updated. My hardware is an Acer Extensa 5630EZ with Intel Dual Core and integrated Intel 4500M graphics. Also, I am using the same ~/.kde4 from 4.5. Current KDE packages are version 4.5.80-2.

Here are the issues I am facing.

1) All system sounds play twice. From login sound to error sounds.

2) Oxygen-transparent worked fine in 4.5 but in 4.6 some regions of the windows do not have the blur effect for things behind them. Notably the title bars and window borders never have the blur effect.

3) I have removed HAL from startup and enabled DBUS in rc.conf. I have upower and udisk installed but still I do not have the suspend and hibernate options in the menu. Do I have to configure this somewhere?

4) The Dolphin search improvements are cool. But the Nepomuk stub repeatedly crashes when I try to run searches. After that happens all searches return no result. Sometimes disabling and renabling Nepomuk in SystemSettings will get the search working again.

5) In 4.5 I had a Nepomuk icon in the system tray. This has dissappeared and I cannot find it either in the menu or in the System Tray settings.

6) Kontact has taken the biggest hit and it is pretty unusable right now. Selecting a 'module' like KMail or KJots often does not cause the windows to be redrawn and the previously selected module remains on the screen. Sometimes, selecting yet another module causes the previous one to be displayed, though the widgets cannot be interacted with.

7) In SystemSettings, when I try to change the KDM theme, instead of requesting authentification, I get an error message:
Code: Select all
Unable to authenticate/execute the action: (code 4)

8 ) The Dolphin Search toolbar does not have a text entry field as in 4.5. The actions available for this toolbar are the same as those for the Main toolbar with no option to add the text entry field. If this entry has moved elsewhere then this toolbar has lost usefulness and will probably cause more confusion than it is worth.

9) KStars does not display anything in the main section of the window where it is supposed to display stars. Zooming out and/or running the Startup wizard does not help. Running from terminal gives the following error with KStars not opening at all.
Code: Select all
$ kstars
Qt: Session management error: Could not open network socket

10) digiKam fails to open giving the following error in the shell
Code: Select all
$ digikam
digikam: error while loading shared libraries: libkipi.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

kipi-plugins version 1.6.0-1 is installed

11) K3B fails to start giving the following error in the shell
Code: Select all
$ k3b
kde(8172): KUniqueApplication: Cannot find the D-Bus session server:  "Failed to connect to socket /tmp/dbus-usPFsBlwCk: Connection refused"

kde(8163): KUniqueApplication: Pipe closed unexpectedly.

Meanwhile grep-ing the output of ps I get
Code: Select all

can confirm:

7) changing kdm theme - same message but "error code 2" when attempting to change the KDM theme

#8) I have/use the "find" toolbar icon which toggles it on

11) K3b doesn't start but similar but different message, see viewtopic.php?f=202&t=91648 , Does Audex run?

can't confirm:

10) Digikam opens fine - I think you are missing a .so, check /usr/lib/libkipi.* - I think you only have libkipi.so.6 installed

Hm, I can't reproduce it here (openSUSE 11.3)

5) In 4.5 I had a Nepomuk icon in the system tray. This has dissappeared and I cannot find it either in the menu or in the System Tray settings.

This has moved to the Nepomuk control center module. There's a "Details..." link that does the same thing.

Sometimes, selecting yet another module causes the previous one to be displayed, though the widgets cannot be interacted with.

Cannot reproduce here, although with newer trunk, kmail is much more responsive. I believe this is an issue with your Nepomuk setup.

8 ) The Dolphin Search toolbar does not have a text entry field as in 4.5.

Hit Ctrl-F to make it appear.

digikam: error while loading shared libraries: libkipi.so.7: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory[/code]
kipi-plugins version 1.6.0-1 is installed

Likely a packaging issue. It works here as far as I can tell.

11) K3B fails to start giving the following error in the shell

Mine crashes 100%, must have been the changes to Solid.

Hope this helps.

Issues 9 and 11 indicate a problem with your session. I suggest logging out, killing all processes running as your user, and removing ~/.dbus. Also, ensure ConsoleKit is functional.

With regards to K3b, it runs fine here.
Code: Select all
Qt: 4.7.1
KDE Development Platform: 4.5.81 (4.6 >=20101125)
K3b: 2.0.80

Re: KDE 4.6 various possible bugs

Thanks for the replies. I played around with it including trying with a new ~/.kde4 and have made some progress.

1) I realised that there were some new audio devices in the Multimedia module and one non-functioning device named Analog Intel Audio (or something like that). New devices included pulseaudio, jack, oss and alsa AFAICR. These are no longer there but I set 'default' as the prefered and I stopped getting the audio device errors and the repeating system sounds.

2) Still present.

3) Still present. I tried running with HAL but still no suspend/hibernate.

4) Nepomuk isn't crashing lately... some upgrades yesterday are probably responsible. I didn't do anything differently.

5) Thanks, I found it. It looks more like an http link than a button which opens a config dialog.

6) Kontact is working much better after the updates. There were some issues in migrating to Akonadi. My GMail account in KMail was duplicated and neither would recieve mail. I couldn't send either. I ended up deleting the Akonadi resources and creating new ones. KJots had some extra books labeled Notes. I deleted them in Akonadi. Contacts and calender resources had to be reconfigured but are working now.

7) Still present

8 ) Still present but I suppose removal of the Search toolbar is the solution.

9) I installed the 4.5 version of Kstars and it worked well. I think the 4.6 version is not finding the textures for some reason. Shell output:
Code: Select all
$ kstars

Re: KDE 4.6 various possible bugs

Regarding:
1) All system sounds play twice. From login sound to error sounds.

I too am seeing (hearing) this. I have default set for notifications and still get duplicates sounds.

Any suggestions welcome.

Have you tried removing the extra devices such as alsa, pulseaudio, etc? After these went, this problem stopped for me.

About Oxygen-transparent, I have also come across this bug with blur, and many consistent crashes when I close programs. Even ksmserver crashes. I use Qt 's raster engine. In 4.5 it was fine.

If you can get backtraces out of those crashes, please submit them to bugs.kde.org.

4) The Dolphin search improvements are cool. But the Nepomuk stub repeatedly crashes when I try to run searches. After that happens all searches return no result. Sometimes disabling and renabling Nepomuk in SystemSettings will get the search working again.

Here same!!

Drsjlasr: Precisely where did you remove them?
System settings / multimedia / phonon seems to all me to do this, but I'm not sure this is the right place.

Also, which ones did you leave in place and select as default??

@jsamyth Yes that is where I removed them.

Now I have default; HDA Intel (HDMI); hw0,0; hw0,3; HDA Intel (Analog)... in that order.

@alexdbars I don't know what I did but that problem has gone away for me.

The problem still persists with kde-4.6

Code: Select all
Unable to authenticate/execute the action: (code 2)

The interesting part is that i have two amd64 machines with kde-4.6, but only one is experiencing this problem.
Very Annoying!
I can`t change any settings in "systemsettings" that requires root privileges.The problem persist even i start systemsetings from root konsole window or with kdesu!

@kollin: Please ensure that PolicyKit/Polkit-1 is installed and functional on the machine that is encountering problems. KDE uses them through it's KAuth framework to execute actions on your system as root (requesting the appropriate credentials, as required by the active framework backend if needed)
