Calligra fonts

Sun Aug 11, 2013 2:48 pm
There is/was bug report https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=316966
about terrible fonts in Words. It was closed as wont fix which implies
that the developers don't have really awful fonts. Since it's marked as
wont fix I guess the developers aren't looking at the bug any more. I
don't want to do a new bug as it seems rude but if they think the fonts
look OK how on earth do they do it.

Has anyone any tips to get clearer fonts on screen

I also tried it again recently, only to be disappointed once more. I haven't had sub-100ppi screens for at least 8 years, so the choice they made (or had to make, whatever the problems) is especially bad to me.

The simple solution is: don't use Calligra. I can't turn off hinting globally only to make Calligra look OK.

It's 2017, and this problem still exists!! I thought people would acknowledge the issue, and that it would have been corrected by now.

I am *certain* that *most* people have this issue; they just *don't* realize it, and they just don't care. This is a shame.

Now, I'm not blaming anybody, and I ~truly~ appreciate the hard work and dedication the Calligra and KDE teams put into all of this wonderful open source software. My point is that sometimes, in order to perfect something, you have to listen to one person, instead of 100. As Henry Ford said, "If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses."

With newer high resolution, high DPI monitors, this issue ~may~ become less noticeable, but the the fundamental implementation of not applying RGB font hinting correctly will still be there. (I believe that gray scale hinting is used at a lower level, and this is not correct).

Font hinting in Calligra is broken, and I'm OK if no one wants to fix it, but please don't tell me it's not broken or that it is irrelevant.

As a side note, I had actually stopped using KDE when the they marked Bug 316966 as RESOLVED WONTFIX back in 2013/14. I'm giving KDE a shot once again, but I plan on sticking with Libre Office for now.

If anyone wants to revisit this issue, I will be happy to help with testing.

$ plasmashell --version
plasmashell 5.11.2

$ kf5-config --version
Qt: 5.9.1
KDE Frameworks: 5.39.0
kf5-config: 1.0

I think it may be worthwhile opening a new ticket.
I read through the bug report and the main issue seems to be that due to troubles with how they were using Qt, they ended up just rendering the fonts at 72 DPI and then scaling that to whatever your screen is. Thus using calligra on hi-dpi screens will likely only exacerbate the problem.

Apparently there were changes made to Qt (5.4) to better support font rendering on hi-dpi screens. I'd be interested to hear what Calligra devs did when upgrading to Qt 5(.4 or later) to address this. If nothing then definitely open a new bug report to fix the rendering on hi-dpi screens.
