Use Skrooge with Windows 10

Thu Mar 17, 2016 8:53 am
Hi all,
Is it possible to use the last version of Skrooge (2.3) on windows 10? On this webpage it is recommended to use "kde on windows" but with this tool it is version 1.6 of skrooge...

Me too!
The 1.6.0 is very slow for some tasks to me.

The best solution I guess is to install a virtual machine with Linux and kde.

I'm also looking for a solution to this. Running a whole Linux VM for such a frequently-used app is a bit prohibitive, but I like Skrooge much, much more than KMyMoney (which does provide an installer for Windows). Would love to see a working installer for the current version :)

Hi,

Here is a procedure used by a friend to run Skrooge on windows 10 (in fact, on the linux embedded in windows 10):

Code: Select all
On Win10 Creator’s Update the Windows Subsystem for Linux  (wsl)
https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/wsl/install-win10
I used ubuntu, then on console...

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:s-mankowski/ppa-kf5
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install skrooge-kf5

=> install Xming

export DISPLAY=:0
sudo apt install dbus-x11
dbus-launch

=> to enable icons in skrooge
export QT_QPA_PLATFORMTHEME=qt5ct
qt5ct

sudo apt-get install plasma-workspace
sudo apt-get install breeze-icon-theme
sudo apt-get install oxygen-icon-theme
sudo apt-get install libkf5iconthemes5
sudo apt-get install libkf5config-bin

sudo apt-get install systemsettings
sudo apt-get install systemsettings5

systemsettings5    ->  and choose "Brise" icons

Add at the end of ~/.config/kdeglobals:
[Icons]
Theme=breeze

I'm not able to test it because I don't have computer on windows.
Could you tell me if this works? If this is the case, I will add it on the web site.
Regards.

Cool, thanks for the clear instructions! :)

Unfortunately it looks like WSL isn't supported yet on the version of Windows 10 I'm running, & a full OS upgrade is a bit more than I can risk at the moment (Microsoft has a habit of releasing updates that break things). I've added this to my ToDo though & will come back around once I'm able - if there isn't a native Windows installer already available by then :)

Two issues with this approach that I can't seem to figure out a solution for:

1) Every time Skrooge is launched, it comes up in a very small (i.e. 450x500) window. Unlike a "native" application, it always forgets the last window size/position/state. I've tried everything I can think of, from xming launch parameters to trying to use devilspie to auto-maximize it, but no matter what I try, it always comes up in a tiny window.

2) On a high-res display, everything is noticeably blurry. Icons are no big deal, but the blurry text actually makes it pretty hard on the eyes after awhile.

Have there been any new developments towards an actual, native Windows build? Or, any ideas/pointers for how the above might be rectified?
