Create pop account in kmail...

Wed Oct 30, 2013 6:46 am
Hi
I use kmail for my email (kde 4.11.2).
I have made some gmail accounts. This went well. The "account wizzard" asks if it should create an account and if you choose to do so an account with a separate name and the usual (sub)folders appears on the left side. This is exactly what I want.
BUT I would also like to set up an old fashioned pop-account. The wizzard doesn't ask if it should create an account and it aims to use "local folders" as place where the pop account lives.
Is there a way to make a sepparate pop-account on the left side?

I'm not sure what you want to have exactly, so I hope this helps anyway...

Just create a new folder for the pop-account in the "Local folders" or rename an existing one (right-click on the "Local Folders" or the respective folder for that).

You could also add a separate Maildir resource if you prefer that (Settings->Configure KMail...->Accounts->Receiving->Add...). But make sure to set a different directory on your harddisk for that one then.
For explanation: a POP3 resource just downloads the mails from the server and moves it to some folder which you can specify (in the POP3 resource's settings, they are at the same place as the above, just select the POP3 resource and click on "Modify..."). The actual storing of the mails on your harddisk is done by the Maildir resource (or "KMail Mail Folder", or MBox).
You could even configure the POP3 resource to store the mails in an IMAP-Folder, though I haven't tried that yet... ;)

Thank you for your elaborate answer. I'll show you what I mean:

Still I can't seem to find a way to make a pop account appear in this way (red circle). I tried you advice and it works but the pop account still is treated differently. I would like the pop account to look just as the imap ones. After all: it also is an account.

As I said, add a new Maildir resource and configure the POP3 resource to store the mails there.
You can also change the Maildir resource's icon if you right-click on it and select "Folder Properties"->"View". Or maybe it's sufficient for you if you just rename the existing "Local Folders"? (also possible in "Folder Properties", "General" tab)
