Kmail & Akonadi Performance Issues

Mon Jan 02, 2017 10:40 pm
I've been a KDE and Kmail user since about 2003. Originally, I loved Kmail - but recently, it's become horrible to use. I don't really want to have to migrate to another email application - I've years and years worth of emails in Kmail - and for archival and legal purposes, I need to keep them.

Presently, I'm using OpenSuse Tumbleweed.

First Issue:

Although I had Kmail configured to leave email on the server for 7 days, I recently discovered it was not doing that. It was just leaving email on the server and it was not being deleted after 7 days. A few weeks ago, there were updates from OpenSuse - and after they were done, I started Kontact - but akonadi would not start. The error was something about not being able to connect to the socket file. In another forum, I was advised to delete the socket file and try again.

That worked - but then I spent hours downloading months and months of emails that should have been deleted from the server. Thousands of emails.

I am not sure if this is significant, but am using POP3 over SSL/TLS port 995.

Second Issue:

This is a huge issue for me. I am regulary spending hours daily stopping, starting, fsck, vacuum akonadi.

All it takes is for me to delete 5 or 6 emails from the inbox and kmail just hangs with "Retrieving Folder Contents Please Wait" and a message at the bottom, "moving messages to trash..."

I can walk away from my PC, go get something to eat for an hour, come back - and it says the same thing, or at the bottom, it will eventually have another message about being unable to connect to the backend (I can't recall the exact message but it is something like that).

So I shutdown Kmail, stop akonadi with akonadictl stop, then wait.... then start... and things work fine for a short time, and then we're back to do this all over again.

It's really really frustrating as you might imagine.

Can anyone help to troubleshoot what the problem is, or is this behaviour now to be expected with kmail and akonadi?

Well, it seems Kmail has become utterly useless for me as an email app. After playing around with akonadictl fsck and vacuum - shut everything down last and went to sleep.

Opened it this morning, it downloaded new email. I deleted about 11 of them before clicking on a message I wanted to read and am stuck on "Retrieving Folder Contents... please wait."

I do not know if this is useful information or relevant as I am not sure what the expected results should be.

However, if I run akonadictl fsck - I get a list of items marked RID and dirty.

I also see a list a of duplicates.

If I run akonadictl fsck a second time, it appears I get the same list of items and duplicates. The output is very long - and although I tried to redirect the output to a file in case it was useful information, it would not write to the file for some reason.

But is it odd that akonadictl fsck finds the same items and duplicates a second time, after its first run?

More observations if it is helpful in diagnosing this.

Even after running akonadictl fsck and vacuum, there are duplicate emails, which I had previously tried to delete, in the Inbox. They will just not go away. When going through my message list, and highlighting any of those, kmail just stops working.

Also, there is an email that I have read, but continues to appear as "unread."

I came here to see if anyone else is also experiencing KMail issues because of akonadi.

On my desktop machine running openSUSE Tumbleweed, I deleted the akonadi files as well, and just re-downloaded all the emails from all of my email account providers. This was because for some odd reason, akonadi just refused to start-up today.

Anyway, the issue seems to be resolved for now, but the terminal output for akonadictl shows:

org.kde.pim.akonadicore: Got a stale notification for an item which was already removed. 37856 ""
org.kde.pim.akonadicore: Got a stale notification for an item which was already removed. 37856 ""
org.kde.pim.akonadicore: Got a stale notification for an item which was already removed. 37857 ""

org.kde.pim.akonadicore: Got a stale notification for an item which was already removed. 37857 ""
org.kde.pim.akonadicore: Got a stale notification for an item which was already removed. 37857 ""

What do these messages mean?

I also have this problem. It is really annoying, but I thought it was just me.

Well... no one seems to have any ideas on how to troubleshoot or correct this, and Kmail has become utterly useless for me :(

I delete a few emails and it just hangs.

The Inbox has a totally garbled view of new messages - just a bunch of grey lines.

akonadictl fsck and vacuum appear to do nothing.

It's unfortunate that after so many years, kmail now seems to have so many problems, at least for me.

The main problem is that, at least speaking for myself, I've never seen such issues and so the causes are unknown to me. It would help if you paste any relevant output *when* the problem occurs, after running "akonadictl restart" on the command line.

You can increase verbosity by installing "kdebugsettings" and activating debug for entries that start with "akonadi".

Okay. I have installed kdebugsettings.

I restarted akonadictl.

I tried to delete about 100 email messages in my inbox. It appeared to delete some of them, but then just froze up. About ten minutes later, kmail, at the very bottom said something about not being able to connect to the back end.

In the console where I restarted akonadictl - I have no idea what is relevant to paste, but I'll paste some lines here:

*********************************************************

I go back to kmail, and it says "Ready" at the bottom, but I can still see many many of the emails I tried to delete, greyed out.

Every email that I try to delete seems to take at least three seconds then the time increases and increases - up to where it seems kmail is just frozen.

So then at the command line, I run akonadictl fsck and get lots of output.

But kmail is still frozen.

Then I run akonadictl restart and after a few moments, I can see my inbox email listing but in the preview pane, it is stuck on "Retrieving Folder Contents Please Wait."

In the console, I see tons of lines of output - and have no clue what is relevant but the last several dozen lines:

So then I shutdown kmail, restart akonadictl, restart kmail - and all the email listing in my inbox is completely unreadable - just long grey and white lines going across the inbox email listing.

But Kmail is basically useless - I cannot read or see the inbox email listing, except for four emails from eflowers.gr. The rest of the email listing is just grey and white lines and what appears to be text garbled and "squished" together.

Here is what I think is going on, but I cannot see any useful information in the console after restarting akonadictl:

There are duplicate emails in my inbox that have been previously deleted, but for whatever reason, are still in the inbox.

When I try to delete them - that is when kmail seems to just freeze.

Running akonaditctl fsck and vacuum does not correct the problem.

Each time I run akonadictl fsck - it seems to "see" the same deleted messages but doesn't actually do anything with them apparently. Every run of akonadictl fsck finds the same duplicates and items that "has RID and is dirty" and ends with

org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: "Migrating parts to new cache hierarchy..."
Migrating parts to new cache hierarchy...
org.kde.pim.akonadiserver: "Consistency check done."
Consistency check done.

I am not sure what the expected behaviour of akonadictl fsck is - but in previous versions of kmail, when I ran this it seemed to clear up the problems for a time.

But I'm wondering if akonadictl fsck is just not doing it's job with this version or OpenSuse Tumbleweed packages.

After awhile - 15 minutes perhaps (after trying to delete messages that I believe are duplicates of emails already previously deleted), and after running akonadictl fsck, I see this:

The duplicate emails are in an IMAP inbox, or a local folder? I see a few issues there and I want to make sure.

Local Folders - Inbox and other folders.

I don't believe I have any email accounts using Imap.

I cannot use Kmail , Address Book, contacts or any of the contact programs, I keep getting the Error, "The Akonadi personal information management service is not operational" Is there a fix or workaround to get the address books to work?

Please open a separate thread with your issue, including your Kontact / KMail version.
