from libreoffice to kexi

Mon Mar 28, 2016 1:06 pm
Wanting to transfer a database from libreoffice (awfully unstable) I have two important points.
1/ When will Kexi run under Windows (and Mac). I understand that actually KDE will do, some day.....
2/Will Kexi allow forms displaying table or query lines and subforms showing lines of a table giving properties related to the line displayed in the main form? I would have joined a picture, but doesn't find how to attach it.....

thanks

There's no dependency on "KDE" (or rather Plasma), to be strict. Kexi 3 is actually a native app on Windows, not less than LibreOffice. Mac version isn't too actively developed at the moment. My guess is that it can come after the Windows version grows in popularity.
When? It depends on interest - actually users need to come and join the effort - if not development and maintenance, then supporting it somehow, helping with the handbooks, tutorials, promotion or just spreading the word. In 2015 there was a call on facebook and twitter to bring more likes and followers. I just guess that engineers are more interested if there were thousands on followers (i.e. potential contact) than hundreds. I wouldn't add personal contacts the list, all the countless emails because organized effort is more efficient when you have no access to a huge funds / time resources. After all, why only developers have to 'sponsor' the product on non-free OSes and not users...

Before someone asks, apps like Kexi are in some aspects (important for some people) different than 'abandonware-like' ones, think, Star/OpenOffice dropped by the acquired Sun, that gave the birth to LibreOffice Base. Kexi has always been Free Software, it was founded as such. Not a guarantee of success in itself. Of course commercial efforts can exist as the license allows to develop plugins, what basically forms a healthy ecosystem. But the core, containing not jut basic functionality, is designed 100% open. Like Linux...

Yes it will. It's among top features being requested, I think I understand what you mean. When? See 1/. :)

So, I spotted a Windows where I am allowed to install Kexi.
On the web I found your recent announcement http://blog.gmane.org/gmane.comp.kde.users.kexi
Went from there to https://www.calligra.org/news/calligra- ... ased/#kexi
Clicked the Get calligra tab to eventually arrive at https://userbase.kde.org/Calligra/Download#MS_Windows

where I found no clue to install Kexi under Windows.....

so I understand I have to wait for Kexi 3, have I ?

That's a general Calligra announcement. All Calligra apps are available for download in a source code form, not all as binaries for all OSes.

Yes, except there is no need to wait. Kexi can come earlier when more people contribute (https://www.calligra.org/contribute) in any way.

Updated that page now. Please note that testing Kexi 2, creating wishes, etc. helps too. Kexi 3 isn't much different regarding features so far.
