Re: Kexi 3.0 Alpha released

Mon Sep 19, 2016 7:28 pm
Thank you for this excellent news.

I'm a little bit surprised as the downloadable archives of the 3.0 Alpha and Beta versions are labeled 2.99.x.
Does this mean that there is no "discontinuity" (for instance uncompatible formats) between the versions 2.x and 3.x ?
Any reason for these archives to stay with a 2.99 version number instead of 3.0 ?
Maybe because you are keeping number "3.0" for the stable version to come, whilst the "2.99" name is used for the Alpha and Beta ?
Can you bring some clarification ?
Thanks.

Re: Kexi 3.0 Alpha released

Hi Julien,
The continuity comes from the semantic versioning concept in computing: http://semver.org. That version is an info for technical people, packagers, testers, maybe other contributors. Users would not see this number in the docs, they see Beta. (To be honest I am not even sure about keeping x.y versioning visible for the user because it's meaningless for them if new features appear in x.y+1 and if also x is compatible with x+1.*; I'd think about visible simpler versioning like in the Chrome browser).

Yes, we're keeping number "3.0.0" for the stable version to come. Kexi code has even runs some math inside so it knows that if version is > x.90.y then that's something like Alpha or Beta.

Regarding "discontinuity", Kexi 3 is developed to be 100% compatible with Kexi 2. Please report any issues showing incompatibility, now it's the best time for that.

A lot of effort for that is needed but it's a part of serious engineering. Some overview how we've been working on porting can be seen at https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Porting_to_Qt%26KF_5.
The only things that are not compatibile are experimental features like scripting. It's good we once marked that experimental because external and internal requirement have changed since (1. Python is has longer chance for offering secure execution environment, 2. Supporting multiple scripting languages is too large cost for us, 3. The Javascript engine available so far (QtScript) is no longer in development and one day will disappear so we're looking at the official one, QJSEngine).

Hi Jarosław,

Thanks you for the detailed explanations.

I like the concept of semantic versioning, as it let us know what is a major version, minor version or bug fix.
Hence, I suggest staying with the detailed version numbers, which let the user know when a major version is released.
When a major version is in development or released, I think an important thing is to mention its backwards compatibility if there is.
This way, users of the current version can go on with there development, knowing that the next release will not force them doing all the work again.

I see that you released the 3.0 Beta.
I'm going to install it and test it.

Regards

Julien,
Thanks for any testing efforts.

Semantic versioning isn't going away, it would be always available in the about box. It's also good thing to mention backward compatibility in our announcement 3.0.0, thanks for the suggestion.

Cheers.

Kexi 3.0.0 & frameworks released!

Dear All,

We're pleased to announce the release of Kexi 3.0.0.

For benefit and convenience of fellow software engineers, we're sharing frameworks originally developed within the Kexi Project (that is KDb, KProperty, KReport). There are marked with the same version 3.0.0 and are prepared for general, standalone usage. So this combined release marks a major milestone for two efforts: porting to Qt 5 started in 2014, development of the three frameworks started in 2008.

Downloads (source code only) & change logs: https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Releases#3.0.0

Reporting bug or wishes: https://community.kde.org/Kexi/File_a_bug_or_wish

Please expect binaries later. Ask your Linux distributors about them or wait for our universal packages for Linux and Windows.

Donate to the project at https://community.kde.org/Kexi/Contact#Donations

Thanks, we need to sober up completely. </joke>

It needs 10 working days at least. Plus other Kexi tasks in the meantime. Plus days when working on something else to be able to drink some coffee.

Hello,

Can you tell me the recommended way to install Kexi 3.0.0 (or latest 3.x.x stable) on Ubuntu 16.04 ?

I'm not sure if I must use the "ppa:kubuntu-ppa/ppa" repository. (http://linuxpitstop.com/install-kexi-on-ubuntu-linux/)
OR the Project Neon to install Calligra and Kexi. (https://userbase.kde.org/Calligra/Download#Ubuntu)

So I would like to install Kexi 3.x.x on Ubuntu and I don't mind to install Calligra along the way..

Thanks

Hi ssinfod,
Both links lead to Kexi 2 that won't receive updates anymore.

Kexi 3 does not require to install parts of Calligra nor use any of them. For Kexi 3 on Ubuntu feel free to contact Ubuntu support for help and request packages or use an Ubuntu-based project https://neon.kde.org. Kexi project is not responsible for these versions.

As for any highly responsible project, there are plans for dedicated Linux packages produced by the Kexi project directly that are distribution-independent, just like Windows/Mac versions are independent of Windows/Mac version. Release of such Linux packages is possible after release of the upcoming Windows version.
