MS Access Import

Sun Jun 03, 2018 1:50 pm
Well, I was trying an alternative to MS Access and met Kexi. I tried ii under Windows and Linux (Ubuntu based distro).
The idea behind Kexi is good but still it's not ready for me.
As announced, Kexi should import Access files but this feature doesn't work. I tried under Windows and Linux and in both Kexi crashes.

I use a lot access and I have a lot of ideas. I think it can be an awsome alternative, even because it's multiplataform.

Can I give suggestions?

Thanks

Hi ??derson
I splited out your post from the release topic since it is not related to this specific release I think.
Yes please share ideas. Here's how: https://community.kde.org/Kexi/File_a_bug_or_wish

We can also discuss on this forum.

Firstly, I'd be grateful for bugreport about the crash you mention. There are people including me that successfully imported all the MS Access data they needed. Yes, data since KEXI is importing data, not anything else (for now). Maybe there's some regression or your data uncovers some issue in KEXI importer.

When reporting anything please always mention version of KEXI.
Thanks.

Hi
You can send to email I've sent you privately here: ucp.php?i=pm&folder=inbox.

I need to know version of KEXI you're using.

Thanks Éderson, I downloaded your private mdb file and will test as soon as possible.

This Access file opens like a fullscreen program and doesn't show the tables, queries and anything, the buttons work as menus and etc. Is it possible make KEXI DB seem like it?

It's possible with command line options (http://www.kexi-project.org/wiki/wikivi ... tions.html) to enable user mode and auto open one or more objects (e.g. forms) -- http://www.kexi-project.org/wiki/wikivi ... rMode.html.

I do realize there's regression in KEXI 3 I will fix for the 3.1.1. release. --> https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=396875

I don't know how to write codes but if you wnat I can help testing KEXI and with suggestions.

Thanks, please do! It helps a lot.
Best,
Jarek

Éderson, I've found possible issue. It is using names such as "nid4U4-05_Disciplina_MédiaUnid4U4-06_Disci" in your case for column names. They should work but there is bad behavior (at MS Access side :)) which sometimes represents names with non-latin characters incorrectly. (the "é" character is such a non-latin character).

Development note: the issue is fixed here: https://github.com/brianb/mdbtools/comm ... a480293e2d

KEXI 3.1.1 will contain this fix too. (in a month or so)

Until then, workaround in your version of KEXI: if possible change names (in your case column names) so they do not include non-latin characters (e.g. change "é" -> "e"). I understand this can be tedious work and also degrades the experience.
