Dolphin freeze

Mon Jun 15, 2015 10:32 am
Hi,

Since a few days Dolphin freeze on start ( for about one minute )
I can only move the window around but no menu or folders are responsive.
The same behavior is for all applications who show a file dialog like vlc player and gwen view.
All apps shows the root folder, my home folder and network more the one time.

The problem occur since 4 days.
I remember changing the configuration of konquerer ( don't allowing cookies etc. )
There was an update of many kde libraries the same time and I install the ffmpeg library.

For three days I am searching the net, not founding any usefull.

Here is the content of the xsession-errors:

Each time I start dolphin the following error is appended to the xerror :
Code: Select all

Do anyone know how to handle this?

The straight forward solution would be to run dolphin in gdb, briefly wait, interrupt it and check the backtrace to see what it's doing while doing nothing.

Code: Select all
$ gdb dolphin 2>&1 | tee dolphin.gdb
> run
# wait, press ctrl+c
> bt
# press enter until you reach the end of the stack
> detach
> quit

If you've a little experience and the stack looks boring: try other threads.

Simply running dolphin from konsole might get you a hint (watch the output output) as well and since this is likely I/O driven, you may also just strace it.

Wild guess: any remote filesystems in use?

Nothing strange ?
I did not mount any remote file system.

There are two USB hard disks which I use.

What I also does the last days :

I created a new ext4 partition with gparted on the same disk Linux run.
Later I do remove the partition.
With the virtual manager I created some test storage pools later removing them.

When I start dolphin the thread claims 1 cpu.
So after starting dolphin 4 times all cpu's are busy.

That thread appears to be waiting in glibs event dispatcher for something to happen - the action is either in another thread (try "thread 2", "bt", "thread 3", "bt" asf.) or the glib eventdispatcher is running in circles.

Code: Select all
QT_NO_GLIB=1 dolphin

will skip use the more straight forward Qt unix event dispatcher (if it's not comming up fast either, the problem is in a different thread)

Hi luebking,

Thanks for your answer.
I tryed
QT_NO_GLIB=1 dolphin

with the same not responding UI.
Later I back traced the second and third thread ...

Seems to be the same :(

When I start dolphin as root there is no freeze.
Here is the output from console:
[root@localhost ~]# dolphin
Connecting to deprecated signal QDBusConnectionInterface::serviceOwnerChanged(QString,QString,QString)
kbuildsycoca4 running...
QDBusConnection: name 'org.kde.kglobalaccel' had owner '' but we thought it was ':1.7'
[root@localhost ~]#

Something wrong with my local settings?

I use the diamond desktop theme.
Oxygen is my widget style.
Buuf Icon set.
Default cursor.
KDE 4.14.9

I changed the widget style and decorations .. nothing happens

Any ideas?

"asf" - "and so forth". Dolphin has 5-6 threads here.
One of them should really be doing something.

You can try to move the dolphin config out of the way:
mv ~/.kde/share/config/dolphinrc ~/.kde/share/config/dolphinrc.bak

why might ease your pain, but unfortunately not tell anything about the cause.

deleting/removing dolphinrc did not solve the problem.
On my machine dolphin only claims 3 threads.

An other "problem" is that Kgpg is not launching ...
A thread is created but no UI ...

Again , on root - everything works ... :-\

Hi there!
It looks like I have the same or at least similar problem.
In my case Dolphin hangs sometimes even for minutes. But when it finally works, it seems to work properly.
I have made some observations - removing files i.e. moving to trash (Del) hangs Dolphin, but erasing (Shift Del) works as it should.
Gwenview has exactly the same behaviour as Dolphin.
So has Kate.
Kgpg starts its thread but no window.
Konqueror hangs like Dolphin.
But Krusader works normally.

***edit***
Sorry there was a mistake - kgpg opens in tray.

Last stacktrace looks like dolphin is loading the places panel - the places are stored in ~/.local/share/user-places.xbel

Yes, I have this file. It seems to be all right. At least the owner ist right, and it's read and write.
But i think this is the right direction.
Some programs (today it was k3B) open some "other" places and shows them together in a treeview.
Content of this other file(?) is wrong. I have the entries /root and /home/user like fifty times or so.

Re: Dolphin freeze

I have found the reason!
After some googling i found, that this "other" file is located at
/home/user/.kde/share/apps/kfileplaces/bookmarks.xml
It contains all the false places, and in my case is 50 000 lines long. Reading the entire content of this file was causing Dolphin and other programs to choke.
So I renamed the file, and everything is looking fine. Programs are responsible, as they should be. New file was created, it contains about 50 lines now.
I will keep on checking this file if it keeps on growing.

Hello,

I renamed the files but nothing happens
Even after start of dolphin those files remain unchanged.

Same here. The file contains ~25000 lines.
I renamed it and dolphin works :)

This seems to be the problem.
And as you mentioned the Kgpg open the app in the task bar.

Thank you both.

Hello,

The problem is back :(
Since two days gwen view and vlc display : root, network, trash, home four times.
I have registered the following:
Gwen View is opened with 3 pictures on startup ( I have 3 or 4 pictures which I like to see on startup )
And this is the same amount of duplicate entries for the folders above.
I added a fourth picture and now gwen view show them four times.
Maybe only a guess.

I wonder that no other user have similar problems.

@brserek
What is your os ?

I use Fedora 21 KDE spin.

I have also Fedora 21 KDE.
The solution we found is only workaround. The real problem still exists.
The file bookmarks.xml keeps on growing, so some application is still doing something wrong.
But finding what it is, is way beyond my abilities.
For now i simply made the file read-only. It works. I just can't add new bookmarks.
Finally - I am planing to install Fedora 22 in next days.
