"Move to Trash" is extremely slow.

Sun Apr 23, 2017 2:14 am
Whenever I move a file to trash in Dolphin (either through the delete key, or clicking "move to trash"), it takes at least a minute or two, just to move a single file or a handful of files. I don't understand why this is, because when I move files with "mv" it happens nearly instantly. The files being deleted are on the same drive as trash (at ~/.local/share/Trash). I am using ecryptfs on my home directory, in case that affects it.

Does anyone know why this is happening and how I can fix it? Or what diagnostics I can do to figure out why it's so slow?

I found a workround by unlimit the Trash size by doing this:
Dolphin->Configure->Trash->uncheck "Limit to maximum size"

Now deleting is fast.

Same here, although for me it might be related that I am using an external drive and the file is moved to the internal trash folder. Also see https://www.reddit.com/r/kde/comments/5 ... _trash_is/

But I assume that you don't use external drives.

Firstly ... KDE is just awesome. By far the best desk top environment I've ever used and I've used pretty much all of them.

Secondly though I am having this annoying problem with moving stuff to the wastebin and taking the steps above hasn't resolved it.

This is in:
KDE Plasma 5.17.3
Frameworks 5.64.0
Qt 5.13.2.

Could be a space issue: how much space do you have on that partition and how large is the file you move? You should ensure at least double the free space, especially with large files, else you might end up with a delay caused by caching. Clearing ~/.cache is also not a bad idea. The latter needs to be done after logging out of the desktop, else you risk crashing applications.

Running Kubuntu 21.10 with Plasma 5.23, Frameworks 5.87.0, Qt 5.15.2, kernel 5.13.0-19 on Ryzen 5 4600H, AMD Renoir, X11
FWIW: it is always useful to state the exact Plasma version (+ distribution) when asking questions, makes it easier to help ...

Ran into the same thing a while ago, so figured I should look into it and found this thread.

Doing this; Dolphin->Configure->Trash->uncheck "Limit to maximum size", didn't help.
Space is not an issue either, my homefolder is on a SSD and I have 207 GB available.

Will try clearing the ~./cache.

Edit:
Emptied the cache-folder and it seems it did the trick.
Any idea what in there might've been causing this problem?

Edit2:
Oh, and thanks people!

same problem here, deleted .cache but still no luck
btw registration and login procedure of kde.org is a PITA, remembers me on deleting items...

running on a nvme ssd (fedora 32) with latest ryzen 7 processor, 32gb of ram and over 800gb free space, so this is for sure a software problem

Same exact problem here, i7 9th gen, 16 gb ram, 300gb+ hd space.
- tried clear cache (and restart)
- tried uncheck "Limit to maximum size"

Interestingly, it takes maybe 2 to 3 seconds in Dolphin, in VSCode it freezes the whole editor (when deleting file(s)) for a good 5-10 seconds. Its odd as otherwise performance is great, no issues. Any other things to troubleshoot this issue?

I saw that running OpenSUSE+KDE+X11 this slowness happens with Dolphin and Konqueror but not with Files(Nautilus). Very weird. Definitly it wasn't OpenSUSE nor KDE it self... i tried it with Gnome... same thing. But trying KDE+WAYLAND.... OMFG!!! Not only the response of whole system got absurdly (like 10x) faster, but that 'move to trash' bug too, does not happens any more with Dolphin.
