I'm not sure which is the best forum for this question but ...
Has anyone any views on nfs3 or nfs4 for kde stability and reliability
particularly if a users home directory is on a nfs server.
Does KDE care ( in theory and in practice ) what the underlying system is ?

As far as I know, KDE does not particularly care at all what the underlying file system is to the home directory, as long as it is capable of supporting symlinks (and potentially sockets). You may wish to make sure Nepomuk and Akonadi are disabled to improve performance and reduce the load on your NFS server however.
