System update requires restart...

Wed Apr 07, 2021 11:54 am
I have recently had 3 'system updates' within 2 weeks showing on Discover. When installed they prompt me to restart the machine. Is this normal or something to worry about? I've never had to restart the machine so often before.

Hi!

This depends on the not mentioned operating systemd you use. Normally you just need to reboot after a kernel-upgrade but it could also be relevant due to changes at dkms, mkinitcpio/initramfs,… Check your package-manager to see what has been updated and required a reboot.

Thanks for the response. I'm using KDE Neon 5.21 User Edition. While I know that kernel and other system files require a restart, I was just surprised that I have had 3 of these 'system upgrades' in the last 2 weeks. I was just wondering if this is just a blip, or if anyone else has experienced the same thing?

This explains the whys.

click the 'system updates' entry to toggle viewing what is included. This layout change seems cleaner in some cases, where Discover might be showing Flatpak, Snap, and addon updates on top of normal system updates/upgrades all at once.

The new offline part is of course a debatable topic

So this morning I got a 'system update' notification in Discover. The packages to be updated show as Thunderbird and Qbittorrent. Once they had installed I was again prompted to restart, saying that this was required. Updating those packages in the past has never required a restart, but now they are only downloaded rather than updated. Is there a way to apply updates immediately as in the past? Also, previously Discover would list all the packages that needed to be upgraded. Now you have to click on the update to see what is going to be done. (EDIT): using CLI pkcon update will download and install as in olden days!
